ELK GROVE (MPG) - Baseball action in the Delta League as well as other teams from Elk Grove took a pause from league play to participate in various Easter tournaments throughout California, and here is how those local teams performed:
Elk Grove Thundering Herd: The Herd participated in the San Diego Downtown Lions Invitational H.S. Baseball Tournament in San Diego. This tournament was established in 1951 and is ranked by MaxPreps as the No. 5 tournament in the United States, according to the tournament’s web page.
In the Herd’s opening game, they lost in a close one 2-1 against the Rancho Bernardo Broncos from San Diego. Their following game was against the La Costa Canyon Mavericks from Carlsbad, where the Herd took the win by a score of 3-2.
The Herd finished their tournament participation with two losses, both by the score of 7-0, to the Eastlake Titans of Chula Vista and the El Camino Real Royals of Woodland Hills. Following their four games, the Herd went 1-3 in tournament play, putting them at an overall record of 8-6 as they travel back home to resume Delta League play, where they have a 5-1 record, against the Pleasant Grove Eagles for a three-game series.
Franklin Wildcats: Following their first league series where they went 3-0, the Franklin Wildcats participated in the Boras Baseball Classic in the northern bracket where they played at the Army Depot Park in Sacramento. The Boras Baseball Classic is a single-elimination bracketed tournament held annually in California where 32 elite high school teams face each other to name a state champion, according to the Boras Classic web page.
