Four Chaplains Memorial Service
Veterans from the American Legion, the VFW and the Marine League will join together to remember the Four Chaplains from the Dorchester.
On February 3, 1943, the US Army Transport Dorchester, was enroute to Great Britian, off the coast of Greenland, when it was hit by a torpedo from a U-Boat. As it was sinking, the 4 chaplains on board, two ministers, a priest and a rabbi, gave up their life vests to save their fellow passengers. They ultimately went down with the ship. That night Reverend Fox, Rabbi Goode, Reverend Poling and Father Washington passed life’s ultimate test. In doing so, they became an enduring example of extraordinary faith, courage and selflessness.
Members of the various rescue ships dove into the frigid water to save as many of the passengers as possible. Years later, the heroism of the chaplains as well as the rescuers was recognized by a proclimation by President Eisenhower. On February 4th each year, we recognize the selflessness and courage of those who died to help save their fellow soldiers.
