ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) – City Council incumbent Sergio Robles is facing challenger Peggy Parks for the District 4 seat on the City Council here Nov. 3.
Parks, if elected, aims to be more accessible, transparent and available to her constituents, she said, holding office hours when residents could speak with her. She is in favor of a town hall meeting on Flock cameras.
“I want to support the people of Elk Grove,” she said.
Those at City Council meetings get three minutes to speak, Parks said, and no response beyond some form of written communication.
“There’s never any give and take,” she said.
At office hours, Parks said she would listen to what residents want and speak up for them. During office hours, she may be unable to provide the answer her constituent wants, but at least she would provide an answer, she said.
“I want to start being the voice of the people,” Parks said.
Robles wants to build on his accomplishments such as the creation of the downpayment assistance program for moderate-income homebuyers, he said.
The next step is finding a builder who will construct homes for $250,000 to $300,000, Robles said, which would be affordable to that group.
Additionally, he wants to attract a larger employer to the city, such as a school or healthcare company, and build something like Sacramento’s Aggie Square. And he wants to bring more mom-and-pop businesses to the city.
Robles aims to make the city a desirable place to live with affordable homes and a place area children return to following college graduation.
“I’m excited,” he said.
He has the support of Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen, U.S. Rep. Doris Matsui, D-Sacramento, and Assemblymember Stephanie Nguyen, D-Elk Grove, a former City Council member, he said.
Singh-Allen and District 2 City Council member Rod Brewer were the only nominees to their respective offices and were appointed by resolution to those offices. Neither will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot.
Singh-Allen will serve a two-year term as mayor while Brewer’s term is four years. The District 4 seat is a four-year term, too.
Polls open at 7 a.m. Nov. 3 and close at 8 p.m., according to the Sacramento County Voter Registration and Elections office.
