ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - Another week of league competition for high school football continued with more homecoming games. Elk Grove, Monterey Trail and Sheldon were the schools that played Oct. 2.
Elk Grove vs. Franklin
Elk Grove High School took on Franklin High School and looked to get their first win of the season. Elk Grove’s Thundering Herd were 0-5 coming into the game following a loss to Monterey Trail.
Franklin came into the game at 3-2, coming off a homecoming win and looking to ruin Elk Grove’s. And from the start of the game the Wildcats took control.
Franklin’s game plan worked on both offense and defense before halftime, giving them a commanding 37-7 lead.
And the second half was like the first, with the Thundering Herd unable to find any solutions. The Wildcats won 63-14, dropping Elk Grove to 0-6 and 0-2 in league play. Franklin is now 2-0 in league play and 4-2 on the season.

Monterey Trail vs. Laguna Creek
Monterey Trail played Laguna Creek in their homecoming game. Laguna Creek was 1-3 and looking to get back in the win column. Monterey Trail came into the game 3-1, with a three-game win streak. The Mustangs were looking to keep that alive.
And from the opening kick, the Mustangs showed they did not want to lose homecoming. They opened the game with an astonishing 26-point first quarter while holding the Cardinals to scoreless.
The Mustangs were able to follow up with 14 points in the second quarter. Laguna Creek scored before halftime, but that was the only time they would reach the endzone.
The game ended with Monterey Trail trouncing Laguna Creek 61-6, pushing the Mustangs win streak to four games and improving their record to 4-1 on the season. They are 2-0 in the Delta League. Laguna Creek dropped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Sheldon vs. Pleasant Grove
Sheldon High School took on Pleasant Grove High School in the last homecoming game of the week. And just like Franklin, Pleasant Grove was coming off their own homecoming win looking to spoil another.
Sheldon’s Huskies were looking for their first win of the season. They came into the game 0-4 following a bye week. The Eagles, on the other hand, were 2-3 on the season looking to get back to .500.
Pleasant Grove jumped out to an early lead to make it 16-0 in the second quarter. Sheldon fought back and scored. But the Eagles were able to stretch the lead throughout the game to keep it out of reach.
With a 41-14 win, Pleasant Grove bumped their record to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in the league. Sheldon is still in search of its first win of the season. Sheldon is 0-5 overall and 0-1 in league play.
Cosumnes Oaks had a bye week. They are preparing to take on Elk Grove Oct. 9. While Laguna Creek High School is the only school that has yet to play its homecoming game, the Cardinals look forward to it on Oct. 16.
