ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - It was not just the start of league play for Delta League high school football, but the start of homecoming season, too. Pleasant Grove High School and Franklin High School played their homecoming games Sept. 25. A little more was on the line as both schools were looking to start league competition strong while winning their homecoming games. Both teams succeeded. 

Pleasant Grove’s Eagles took on Laguna Creek High School, where the Eagles were 1-3 coming into this game and the Cardinals were 1-2. The Cardinals came out strong and led at halftime 21-7. Although Pleasant Grove was behind, they did their best to avoid losing. 

The Eagles fought back, scoring on offense while stopping Laguna Creek, and slowly clawed their way back to tie the game in the fourth quarter. In the final minutes of the game, the Eagles scored to take the lead 28-21. Laguna Creek made one last push to score but failed. Pleasant Grove improved to 2-3 on the season while Laguna Creek fell to 1-3. 

The Cosumnes Oaks High School Wolfpack traveled to Franklin High School, and just like Pleasant Grove, the Franklin Wildcats were looking to start league competition strong and win their homecoming game. Franklin was looking to get above .500, while the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack was looking to improve, too. The Wildcats came into the game ready. Coming out strong and taking the lead early, they never looked back. They finished the first quarter with a 22-0 lead and led 43-0 at halftime. The Wolfpack continued to fight but lost 50-7. Franklin improved to 3-2 on the season. Cosumnes Oaks dropped to 1-4.
 

Monterey Trail High School was on the road against Elk Grove High School. Although this was not a homecoming game, both teams wanted a win to start league competition. Elk Grove’s Thundering Herd was looking for their first win on the season, while Monterey Trail was 2-1, hoping to extend a two-game winning streak. The Mustangs scored 14 points to start the game, but Elk Grove cut the lead before halftime. Monterey Trail then broke the game open in the third quarter. Scoring three touchdowns to Elk Grove’s one, the Thundering Herd was unable to overcome the deficit, losing 55-32. Elk Grove dropped to 0-5, while Monterey Trail improved to 3-1. 

Sheldon High School’s Huskies did not play. They were getting ready for their homecoming game Oct. 2 against Pleasant Grove.
