ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - With volleyball teams now playing league games, every set and game counts toward post-season play where every school can fight for the Delta League Championship.

Sheldon High School traveled to Cosumnes Oaks High School Sept. 16, when the Huskies sported a better overall record than their opponents. But in league play Sheldon was 0-3 while the Wolfpack was 2-0. 

Sheldon was coming off a 3-1 loss to Laguna Creek, while Cosumnes Oaks was coming off a dominant 3-0 win against Kennedy High School.

The Wolfpack came out strong and won the first two sets, making it difficult for the Huskies. But the Huskies fought back, winning the third set before falling in the fourth.

Cosumnes Oaks improved to 7-6 overall and 3-0 in league play while Sheldon dropped to 7-7 overall and 0-4 in league play.  

Elk Grove High School stayed home to take on Laguna Creek High School. Elk Grove’s Thundering Herd came into the game with a better overall record at 7-5 while the Cardinals were 4-2. Both teams were 1-1 in league play.

Laguna Creek was coming off a 3-1 victory against Sheldon, while Elk Grove was coming off a 3-0 loss to Pleasant Grove.

This match had high scoring sets, but in similar fashion, Laguna Creek won the first two sets before Elk Grove stole the third and dropped the fourth.

The Cardinals improved their record to 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in league play. The Thundering Herd dropped to 7-6 on the season and 1-2 in the league.

Pleasant Grove High School took on Franklin High School at home. Although the Eagles were below .500 going into the game at 8-9, they were 2-1 in league play. Franklin had an overall record of 3-6 but had the same 2-1 league record. 

Once the match started, it was one-sided from the start. Pleasant Grove found open spaces on the floor the whole game. Franklin fought to make it close each set but were unable to close out any, losing 3-0. 

Pleasant Grove moved back to .500 overall and 3-1 in league play, while Franklin dropped to 3-7 and 2-2 in the league.

Monterey Trail High School was the only team that did not play a league opponent. 

They traveled to play the Kennedy High School Cougars, with both teams coming in with 5-2 records on the season. The Cougars were 0-2 in league play while the Mustangs were 1-2. 

This was the closest game of the week. The teams traded sets until Monterey Trail closed it out to win 3-2, improving to 6-2 overall but still 1-2 in league play.
