ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - Sheldon High School traveled to play in the third Annual Shaq Thompson Girls Flag Football Tournament hosted by Grant Union High School on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Shaq Thompson, a current NFL player on the Buffalo Bills, attended and played football for Grant Union High School. And not just football, he was a three-sport star athlete competing in baseball and track as well. 

Thompson was an All-American in football, being a five-star recruit. He placed seventh in the state for track and field in the 100-meter dash, and he was even drafted in the MLB to the Boston Red Sox. 

He chose to play football at the University of Washington, where he continued his stellar career. That ended up with him being drafted in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft to the Carolina Panthers. 

Grant, Roseville, Vista de Lago, Red Bluff, Sheldon, Foothill and Nevada Union all competed in the Sept. 12 tournament. 

Sheldon had come into the tournament with an outstanding record of 7-1 on the season. Coming off a dominant 40-0 win in league play against Franklin, the Huskies were looking to continue that momentum throughout the tournament, which they did. 

The Huskies played Red Bluff in their first game. Starting off strong, they were able to put up 44 points, all while not allowing Red Bluff to score. 

In their next game, they took on Vista de Lago, which was 4-2 on the season going into the game. This game was nothing like the first. It was an extremely low-scoring game.

Both defenses shut out the other team’s offense, forcing the game to go into overtime with the score at 0-0. But Sheldon was able to prevail, scoring a touchdown that was able to win the game 6-0. 

The Huskies went on to face Grant in the championship game. Both teams went into the game with one loss on the season. 

What looked to be both a competitive and high-scoring game turned out to be very one-sided. Sheldon kept the momentum it built and did not look back. 

The Huskies’ offense and defense showing up, and rallying allowed them to win in a dominant fashion, 32-6. 

The Huskies went undefeated in this tournament, which pushed their record to 10-1 on the season. They will continue their terrific season in league competition as well as in other tournaments.
