ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - It was not just a normal Friday for high school football. Playing a game on the 25th anniversary of the World Trade Center being hit, then collapsing. Remembering all of the lives that were lost, and the ones that sacrificed themselves for the safety of others.

It has been over a decade since high school football was played on 9/11, going back to 2015. There could have been an opportunity in 2020’ however, due to Covid-19 the football season was pushed to play in early 2021 instead. 

Friday started with Monterey Trail having a bye this week, coming off a 45-33 victory in their last game against Thomas Downey High School. 

The Mustangs will have their first home game in their next outing against McClymonds, looking to improve to 2-1 on the season. 

Pleasant Grove took on Tokay, looking to get back into the win column after losing to Ponderosa. However, the first half did not go the Eagles’ way, ending the first half behind 22-6. 

But in the second half, specifically the fourth quarter, the Eagles cut into the lead. They scored in multiple drives while not giving up any more points, but it was not enough. Pleasant Grove lost 19-22, dropping the Eagles to 1-2 before they travel to play Edison in their next outing. 

Laguna Creek took on Placer at home, hoping to win in back-to-back games. But the Cardinals found themselves down early, ending the first quarter 14-7. 

Every time Laguna Creek would score to cut the lead, Placer would answer right back. Placer was able to keep the distance on the scoreboard, ending the game 34-28 and dropping Laguna Creek to 1-2 on the season. 

After taking a loss to Edison, Franklin took on Inglewood at home. However, it did not go entirely their way for the Wildcats. 

They faced a solid team in Inglewood that is 2-1 on the season and currently ranked No. 34 in California. Franklin fought throughout the game but was unable to close the gap and lost 21-50.

The Wildcats, like Pleasant Grove and Laguna Creek, are 1-2 on the season looking for a win in their next outing against Twelve Bridges. 

Cosumnes Oaks, Elk Grove and Sheldon were all looking for their first wins of the season in their last games. Cosumnes Oaks took on River City, which was a low-scoring game ending the first quarter tied at 0-0. River City was the first to score to take the lead 7-0 in the second quarter. 

The Wolfpack was able to score two touchdowns in the third to take the lead. However, River City scored in the fourth quarter to retake the lead and win the game 21-15. This dropped Cosumnes Oaks to 0-3, still looking for the first win of the season. 

 Sheldon had gone into the game against Lodi looking for that first win, but it was not their night. 

The Huskies had played hard throughout the game but ended up losing 24-6 and forcing them to 0-3 on the season.  They will look to get a win in their next game against Natomas. 

The Elk Grove Thundering Herd had traveled to take on Dublin, where both teams were fighting for their first win. 

Both teams gave everything in this game, but Elk Grove found itself down and could not make a comeback. The Herd lost the game 28-37 and is still in search of its first win. 

It was not the best week for the Delta League in football, but there is still a long rest of the season.
