ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - The Elk Grove Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting Saturday evening after officers responded to an alleged arson on Bradshaw Road, police said Sunday. 

Officers responded at 6:04 p.m. Sept. 12, following a report of an arson at a home in the 8600 block of Bradshaw Road, police said. Officers there discovered an RV trailer that had allegedly been set on fire by the man, who was known to residents, according to police. 

Cosumnes Fire Department firefighters responded, police said, and extinguished the fire. The suspect fled, according to police. Officers located the man near Waterman Road between Sheldon Road and Calvine Road, police said. He failed to stop, according to police, and a police helicopter found him in a field.

The suspect allegedly pointed what looked like a rifle at the law enforcement helicopter overhead, prompting an officer to fire at the man, according to police. The suspect, police said, was not struck by the officer’s gunfire and was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted wound.

The rifle was later determined to be a pellet gun, according to police. No other individuals or officers were injured, police said. 

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office has yet to release the name of the man. An investigation is being conducted by the Elk Grove Police Department's Investigation Bureau, which is standard practice for any officer-involved shooting that occurs in the city of Elk Grove. 

An independent review of the incident will be conducted by the Elk Grove Police Department's Professional Standards Bureau. The officer who fired at the suspect has been placed on administrative leave, per Police Department policy.
