ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - The long wait is over. After months of training, practice and scrimmages, the high school football season finally began with games on Friday, Aug. 28.

Each team in the Delta League had a non-league matchup and will have three more non-league games before league competition.

Pleasant Grove and Cosumnes Oaks were the only teams that had home games.

Monterey Trail traveled to Pittsburg High School, where the beginning of the game looked to be competitive as both teams traded touchdowns, ending the 1st quarter 7-6 with Monterey Trail on top.

However, Pittsburg found a groove and never looked back, scoring 34 unanswered points through the rest of the game and winning 40-7. And although it may have been a tough game for Monterey Trail, Pittsburg has been a top football program in the state, posting 10 win seasons the last five years.

Monterey Trail will travel again to play Downey High School in their next game.

Cosumnes Oaks at home against Pleasant Valley, fought throughout the game, but were not able to come out on top. After a 19-35 loss, the Wolfpack looks to bounce back in its next game against Granite Bay.

And because Cosumnes Oaks was home, Franklin High School had to play on the road. The Wildcats traveled to Stockton to play Chavez High School, where they found themselves down 7-0.

But after the first quarter, Franklin switched the momentum of the game and kept it. The Wildcats ended up winning the game with a 34-14 final score. They will look to keep their momentum going into their next game against Edison.

Elk Grove started its season just like Franklin and headed to Stockton against Edison.
Unlike Franklin, it did not go their way in the end, with a result of 39-30 in favor of Edison.
Elk Grove will stay on the road in its next game against Chico High School.

Sheldon, playing at Cordova, showed great fight the entirety of the game but was unable to come out on top and lost 33-16.

The Huskies look to bounce back in their next game against Liberty Ranch.

Laguna Creek kept the traveling trend going by playing at River City High School in the closest game of the week.

Fighting until the final buzzer, the teams needed as much time as possible. The game ended 21-19 as Laguna Creek fell to River City.

In their next game, the Cardinals will stay home to play Lodi High School.

Pleasant Grove was the second team to start the season at home against Christian Brothers.

And similar to Franklin, the Eagles started the game down 7-0 but ended up tied at halftime 21-21. The second half is where the game took a turn.

Pleasant Grove started to separate throughout the third and fourth quarter, topping the Falcons 56-28. The Eagles look to take that same fight to Ponderosa High School in their next game.
