ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - High School football scrimmages on Friday, Aug. 21 against non-league schools gave each team a chance to go against someone in a different uniform.

The Junior Varsity teams started their scrimmages between 5 and 6 p.m., while Varsity started between 7 and 9 p.m. Each scrimmage was either against one other team, or it was like a jamboree, where there are multiple teams and each team plays a certain amount of time against one another. 

High schools like Laguna Creek, Elk Grove, Franklin and Pleasant Grove participated in scrimmages. Laguna Creek and Elk Grove only scrimmaged one team, while Franklin and Pleasant Grove scrimmaged multiple in a jamboree.

Each of these teams traveled away to play in each scrimmage: Laguna Creek to Destiny Christian Academy and Elk Grove to Granite Bay High School. 

Franklin visited Rocklin High School to also play McClatchy High School and Placer High School, while Pleasant Grove traveled to Folsom High School to take on Edison High School and Rio Americano High School. 

Having Junior Varsity and Varsity playing allowed each player to get acclimated to play a real game where spots can be either earned or lost for the season. And with just a week before the start of the season they cannot have mistakes that cost the team. 

Each team is going to want to come out strong in the beginning of the season, especially when the first games are going to be against non-league high schools. 

They are going to want to build confidence in both players and coaches, to know what works and what is not going to work for the upcoming season.  

And after months of practicing and training, the start of the 2026-2027 season is here.  

Elk Grove, Laguna Creek and Franklin all are traveling for their first game on Friday, Aug. 28. Elk Grove plays Edison, Laguna Creek plays River City and Franklin plays Chavez. 

Pleasant Grove will have a home game to open the season, against Christian Brothers High School on Aug. 28 as well. 

Each of these teams is looking to make a statement in the Delta League this upcoming season and to make a post-season appearance.
