ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - Elk Grove residents will have multiple opportunities this fall to help determine the future of the city’s former library building as officials begin gathering public input on how the site should be redeveloped.

The city has launched the “Beyond Books” community engagement initiative following the relocation of the Elk Grove Library to its new facility at 9260 Elk Grove Blvd. The former library building at 8900 Elk Grove Blvd., located near Historic Main Street, is expected to become available for redevelopment after the move.

An online survey is now open, allowing residents to share ideas for the property’s future use. The city also plans to host community workshops in September at District56, where participants can discuss redevelopment possibilities and provide additional feedback before recommendations are presented to the Elk Grove City Council later this year.

According to the city, the planning process is intended to gather community input before determining a future use for the nearly two-decade-old building. Officials said the project will focus on identifying a use that serves the public while remaining consistent with the City Council’s long-term vision for the site.

Earlier this year, the city held four youth co-design sessions with students and teens from Joseph Kerr Middle School, Elk Grove High School, the Elk Grove Library and the Teen Center. Feedback from those sessions will be combined with responses from the public survey, outreach at community events throughout the summer and the fall workshops.

City staff also plan to attend community events this summer to collect ideas and answer questions about the project.

After public outreach concludes, the city will evaluate community feedback and conduct a feasibility analysis before presenting recommendations to the City Council in December.
