ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - As summer temperatures continue to rise, the City of Elk Grove is developing a new plan aimed at making streets, sidewalks, bikeways and transit facilities safer during periods of extreme heat.

The city's Heat-Ready Mobility Plan will identify areas most vulnerable to high temperatures and recommend improvements designed to help residents safely travel throughout the community.

Potential strategies include cool pavement treatments, additional shade trees, shade structures and upgraded transit shelters. 

City officials said the plan is focused not only on protecting infrastructure but also on supporting the people who rely on walking, biking and public transportation.

Extreme heat can damage roadways, contribute to pavement deterioration and make outdoor travel more difficult. 

City officials noted that high temperatures can create increased health risks, particularly for children, older adults and outdoor workers.

Community input will help the city identify locations that could benefit most from future heat resilience improvements.
