ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - Chief Warrant Officer Three Robert M. Marzan, a U.S. Army Reservist and Elk Grove native, was among six U.S. service members who lost their lives in an incident tied to the conflict involving Iran, according to federal and state officials.

In a March 4 news release, the U.S. Department of War identified Marzan, 54, of Sacramento, as having died at the scene of a Iranian strike in Port Shuaiba, Kuwait, on March 1. Officials said he was assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command in Des Moines, Iowa,   and was supporting Operation Epic Fury.

U.S. Army Reserve service records show that Marzan served on active duty from 1990 to 1994 before continuing his service in the Army Reserve beginning in 1994. He received several military honors, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Acting Gov. Eleni Kounalakis issued a joint statement March 4 honoring Marzan’s service and extending condolences to his family.

“California mourns the loss of Chief Warrant Officer Three Marzan, a courageous Californian whose service to our nation was marked by honor and distinction,” Newsom and Kounalakis said in the statement. “The sacrifices made by military families are immeasurable, and California stands in solidarity with them, united in grief and gratitude.”

The governor’s office said Marzan is survived by his wife and family. The flags at the California State Capitol and the Capitol Annex Swing Space will fly at half-staff in his honor.

Members of the Elk Grove High School Class of 1989 shared a tribute on social media, reflecting on his roots in the local community.

“For those of us who walked the halls of Elk Grove High with Robert, he will always be remembered as a fellow classmate and a part of the fabric of our community,” a post on the official Elk Grove High School Class of 1989 Instagram page read. “Like so many who grow up in Elk Grove, he carried the values of service, commitment and dedication far beyond our hometown.”

Elk Grove High School Class of 1989 alumnus Greg Neill also shared a tribute on Facebook.

“The friendship and memories of being a friend of Robert from our days at EGHS and the time before he enlisted in the Army, I will always remember and cherish. He was my friend, our buddy and our classmate.”

Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen also offered condolences on Facebook, noting Marzan’s ties to the Elk Grove community.

The City of Elk Grove announced on social media following the news that the city and Wilton Rancheria Tribal flags would be flown at half-staff until sunset on Thursday, March 12 in honor of Marzan.
