ELK GROVE/GALT, CA (MPG) - The Cosumnes Fire Department recently responded to several structure fires that all started in garages. Though these incidents were not related and had different causes; they can serve as an important reminder that garages can be high-risk spaces.

Here are some simple steps to reduce fire risk in your garage:

Store flammable liquids (gas, paint, solvents) in approved containers and away from ignition sources; Keep clutter and combustibles away from heaters, water heaters and electrical panels; Never run vehicles or gas-powered equipment inside a closed garage; Use heavy-duty extension cords only when necessary, and never permanently; Charge lithium batteries (tools, bikes, lawn equipment) on hard surfaces; Dispose of oily rags properly, never pile or store them inside; Make sure smoke alarms are working and that your garage has a fire-rated door into the home.
