ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) – The National Action Network Sacramento, in partnership with the City of Elk Grove, will host one of the region’s signature celebrations honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from 8:30 a.m. Jan. 17 at District56, located at 8230 Civic Center Drive.

The annual MLK Community Breakfast, sponsored by Sky River Casino, brings together civic leaders, educators, faith leaders, corporate partners and community members for a morning centered on reflection, fellowship and action.

Councilmember Rod Brewer and National Action Network Sacramento President Rev. Dr. Tecoy Porter will serve as hosts. The program will feature performances by the MLK Celebration Choir and the Fortune School Marching Band, adding music and energy to the morning’s observance.

A highlight of the event will be the presentation of the Drum Major awards, which recognize individuals for outstanding community service, leadership and a commitment to social justice. The honors are inspired by the values outlined by Dr. King in his “Drum Major Instinct” sermon.

This year’s Drum Major honorees include Rev. Dr. Efrem Smith for Peace, Volma Volcy for Justice, Sharie Wilson for Excellence in Entrepreneurship, Derrell and Tina Roberts for Righteousness and Dr. Melanie Harrison Okoro for Economic Empowerment. The NextGen Drum Major awards will be presented to Princeton Mingo and Marho Akpo.

The keynote address will be delivered by Rev. Dr. Joy Johnson.
