ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - Rabbi Chaim Groner and Chabad of Elk Grove invite the entire Elk Grove community to its fourth annual Chanukah celebration “Light Up Elk Grove” from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, at Old Town Plaza, 9615 Railroad St.
Hanukkah, one of the most widely observed Jewish holidays, is an eight-day festival often referred to as the “Festival of Lights” and celebrated with candles, food, family and friends. Each night’s added candle brings both literal and symbolic light.
Meaning “dedication” in Hebrew, Chanukah commemorates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian army in 165 B.C.E. and the subsequent liberation and “rededication” of the Temple in Jerusalem. There was only enough oil to light the Temple menorah for one night, but the flame miraculously lasted for eight days until a rider could bring fresh oil.
Traditional food including latkes (potato pancakes) and doughnuts will be served. Activities include a bounce house, balloon twisting, a caricature artist, strolling magician. The event is free for the public to attend.
