ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - In a heartfelt ceremony held on Nov. 14, the Elk Grove Water District formally dedicated its new water-wise demonstration garden in honor of former board member Sophia Scherman.

The newly named “Sophia Scherman Garden” surrounds the District’s Administration Building and features a diverse array of drought-tolerant, climate-appropriate plants. Designed to showcase landscaping that thrives with minimal water, the garden serves as a living example for residents seeking practical ways to conserve water at home.

The project fulfills one of Scherman’s long-held goals: giving Elk Grove a hands-on demonstration space where the public can see how beautiful, efficient landscaping can benefit the environment and reduce water use.

Scherman, who served on the Florin Resource Conservation District/Elk Grove Water District Board from 2016 to 2024, including two years as chair, was a driving force behind many important district initiatives.

According to General Manager Bruce Kamilos, the creation of the water-wise garden was Scherman’s vision to complement the district’s new Administration Building.

“Sophia championed this garden from day one,” Kamilos said. “Her vision, leadership, and resolve made this possible, and it is only fitting that we dedicate this beautiful space in her name.”

The dedication ceremony on Nov. 14 not only highlighted Scherman’s legacy, but also underscored the district’s continued commitment to water efficiency and environmental stewardship.

As attendees gathered around the blooming, water-wise landscape, Kamilos proclaimed the official dedication.

“Today, I am proud to formally proclaim and dedicate this beautiful garden as The Sophia Scherman Garden,” he said.

The district encourages residents to visit the garden, explore the plant varieties, and learn firsthand how water-wise landscaping can enhance both private gardens and the community as a whole. The Sophia Scherman Garden stands as a tribute to a lifelong public servant, and as an inspiration for generations to come.
