ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - At its homecoming game against Elk Grove, Laguna Creek was not just looking to win its homecoming game but hoping to keep a two-game win streak alive. The Cardinals had beat both Cosumnes Oaks and Franklin during their homecoming games the previous two games.

Elk Grove had come into the game looking to get back into the win column as well as to upset Lagna Creek’s homecoming. The Thundering Herd was coming off a 27-17 loss that it faced against the undefeated Chico High School Panthers.

Both teams had high energy going into the game, with the crowds on either side giving energy that the players could feed off as well.

The game started with both teams going back and forth where neither could score and with both defenses playing solid. However, Elk Grove was able to gain a slight advantage, scoring a touchdown before the end of the first quarter.

There was more action within the second quarter where Laguna Creek was able to score a long touchdown pass that tied the game at 7-7.  Elk Grove was able to respond with another touchdown of its own, pushing the lead to 14-7 going into halftime.

After the halftime show and the crowning of homecoming king and queen, Elk Grove was able to take advantage and not look back. The Herd scored two touchdowns and its defense shut down the Laguna Creek offense.

Pushing the final score to 28-7, the Thundering Herd was able to get back into the win column, spoiling the Cardinals’ homecoming game and snapping its two-game win streak.

Elk Grove will have a home game against Sheldon High School, with Sheldon still in search of its first victory of the season. Elk Grove looks to bring its record to 4-4 after having a slow start to the season starting 0-2.

One homecoming game is left in the season, for Monterey Trail High School. The Mustangs will take on Cosumnes Oaks on Oct. 24.
