ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - The Elk Grove Girls Softball League was into its second and third week of recreational fall ball season, with four games going on at one time at Elk Grove Park.          

Games started at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Three age groups and divisions played: 8U Silver National, 10U Silver National and 12U Silver Pacific. Both the 10U Silver National and the 12U Silver Pacific divisions were in their second week while the 8U Silver National team had started a week earlier and was playing its third week.

Each division had three teams competing at Elk Grove Park and three other teams competed in Dixon, Rocklin or Roseville.

The Elk Grove Girls Softball League was established to provide softball skills and character development. There is constant opportunity for any player to play and to get better in leagues that happen year-round. Teams play a recreational season in the fall and spring, then recreational All-Stars and a select All-Star team.           

The spring recreational season marks the primary season for softball. Playing in the beginning of February and ending in May, it allows players ages 6-12 to compete against other youth players. They then head into the recreational All-Stars and the All-Star select team.          

The recreational All-Star team will play from May until July. Being overseen by USA Softball, they play higher competition and travel to neighboring leagues to play their best teams. The select All-Star team will play the highest level of competitive softball before getting into the fall season.

The fall season starts in August and goes into October. They play in higher competition against neighboring leagues just as the All-Stars.

If someone is looking to just get started playing youth softball to hopefully play competitively, it’s recommended to start playing in the spring season. Spring league allows a newcomer to easily be introduced to softball without the overwhelming feeling of starting something new and it being too much.
