ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - The Elk Grove Police Department is warning residents about recent “distraction robberies,” in which suspects use trickery to steal property by diverting a victim’s attention.

Tactics can include asking for directions, attempting a hug or just creating commotion to allow thieves to grab wallets, purses, necklaces or other valuables. Authorities say men and women alike have committed these crimes, often targeting the elderly or women wearing jewelry.

According to a statement made via social media on Aug.20, the department shared the most recent case of this crime, which occurred on Aug. 5 at a shopping center parking lot along Elk Grove Boulevard.

In the case, a black Dodge Durango approached a woman in a shopping center parking lot along Elk Grove Boulevard. Police said one suspect tried to engage her in conversation about her jewelry. The woman did not respond but another suspect exited the vehicle, forcibly grabbed her necklace and fled.

Police quickly launched an investigation, identifying a southeastern Elk Grove residence linked to the suspects. After obtaining a search warrant, officers located the vehicle, the suspects and the stolen jewelry. According to the department, three robbery arrests were made: 25-year-old Larisa Stoian, 26-year-old Ion Stoian and a 17-year-old girl. Two others at the residence were taken into custody on outstanding warrants.

On May 6, the department reported five distractionrobberies over a six-week period. The Aug. 5 incident brings the total to at least six cases in the past five months, police said.

To prevent becoming a victim, police advise residents to be cautious of strangers who invade personal space or act unusually, such as asking for a hug or placing something on you. Step back, protect personal belongings, politely decline and walk away.

Authorities also recommend discussing distraction robberies with elderly family members or neighbors, since many victims are targeted for wearing jewelry or appearing trusting. Simple safety tips include keeping valuables out of sight, staying aware of your surroundings and being cautious when approached by strangers.

Police urge residents to trust their instincts and immediately report suspicious behavior. If someone asks unusual questions, lingers nearby or attempts to create commotion, move to a safe place and contact police. Quick reporting could prevent further crimes.
