SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) - As the new school year begins and students return to their classrooms, newly retired teachers can often feel ambivalent. Happy to be free of the demands placed on educators, but missing the shared connections when pupils begin a new journey in learning.
If you are a retired teacher or simply a friend of public education, you are invited to an informal coffee klatch hosted by the Sacramento Northeast Division 75 of the California Retired Teachers Association (CalRTA). Their third and final summer get-together will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at the Starbucks on the corner of Madison Avenue and Dewey Drive in Fair Oaks.
Helping students succeed is an important role of being a teacher, and the retired teachers of California Retired Teachers Association Division 75 continue giving back to their communities. Awarding scholarships to students who aspire to be teachers is one such endeavor. Another is giving monetary grants to active classroom teachers for student enrichment projects that otherwise might not be funded. At the state level, California Retired Teachers Association will be giving cash awards to 50 teachers in September and again in February.
Helping retired teachers succeed in their retirement is also very important goal. In 2014, CalRTA helped the Legislature solve the $71 billion funding deficit at the California State Teachers Retirement System (CalSTRS) thus ensuring every teacher receives full retirement benefits. In 2022, we helped influence a 5 to 15% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) for our older retirees.
In 2025, California Retired Teachers Association was a leading advocate in the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act (SSFA) which is now repaying all benefits withheld by 40 years of penalties on the earnings and survivor benefits of teachers and other public servants.
So, whether you are interested in learning how California Retired Teachers Association is helping active and retired teachers or just want to meet and connect with other educators, you are invited to attend.
Mark your calendar for Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. and come to the Starbucks at 6711 Madison Ave. at Dewey Drive in Fair Oaks. We invite you to become a part of the collective voice that champions the rights and well-being of all educators. Contact [email protected] for more information.
