Pleasant Grove Looking for Defensive Stop
ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - Friday, Aug. 29 marked the second week of Friday night lights in Elk Grove. A lot of good football was played by every team that competed.
The night started off for each high school with the Junior Varsity teams playing at 5 p.m. and Varsity kicking off at 7 p.m.
Elk Grove High School’s first home game faced Downey High School, where it was a back and forth heading into the fourth quarter with Elk Grove ahead by a touchdown. Downey continued to fight and was able to pull out the close victory, beating Elk Grove 43-42. This pushed Elk Grove to 0-2 on the season heading into week three, where they take on Golden Valley High School.

Franklin High School had traveled to Edison High School coming off a dominant victory against Hiram Johnson High School in week 1. Franklin was able to carry its momentum and kept it rolling as they had defeated Edison 40-29. Now they are looking to continue that momentum, being 2-0 heading into week three where they take on Chavez High School.
Another close back and forth game was played by Cosumnes Oaks High School and Pitman High School. Both teams went back and forth trading scores and trying to gain the edge. Pitman was able to persevere against Cosumnes Oaks and won 42-41, putting Cosumnes Oaks 0-2 on the season.
Pleasant Grove High School, coming off its week one win, had played its home opener against Lodi High School. The first half of the game was neck and neck, heading into halftime with a tie game. Pleasant Grove had made the right changes during halftime, only allowing Lodi to score one time in the second half. Pleasant Grove came out on top, 43-22, to push its record to 2-0.

Laguna Creek High School traveled to take on Placer High School. Placer was able to take a quick lead early in the game, forcing Laguna Creek to fight an uphill battle. Laguna Creek fought until the very end, falling to Placer 49-34 and putting Laguna Creek at 0-2 to start the season.
Coming into this week, Sheldon High School had lost a close game in overtime in week one and was looking to have a different outcome against River City High School. River City was able to grab a quick and early lead that it was able to build throughout the game. Sheldon, fighting until the final buzzer, lost the game 36-0 and fell to 0-2.
Monterey Trail High School had a bye in week two coming off of a victory against Inderkum High School. The Mustangs take the week to recover and to prepare for their next game against Amador Valley High School, looking to win to advance their record to 2-0.

No matter the outcome of the games, each team will continue to put in effort to get better to win each day so they can see the results they are looking for. Teams are going to watch film so they can see the mistakes that were made and correct them before playing in their next game.
