ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - National Night Out, held annually on the first Tuesday in August, is a nationwide event that brings neighbors and law enforcement together to promote community safety and unity.
Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, this evening aims to raise awareness about crime and drug prevention while strengthening the bond between residents and public safety agencies.
In Elk Grove, National Night Out is a beloved tradition that encourages neighborhoods to come together in a show of solidarity, engagement and mutual support. Beginning about 5 p.m. Aug. 5, residents throughout the city organize block parties and community get-togethers in front yards, cul-de-sacs and nearby parks. Most events wind down by 9 p.m.
These local gatherings foster a sense of community and help build trust between residents and public safety officials. The Elk Grove Police Department and Cosumnes Fire Department plan to visit as many neighborhood celebrations as possible throughout the evening, greeting residents and showing support for community-driven safety efforts.
The event also serves as a visible message to criminals that neighborhoods in Elk Grove are connected, engaged and working together to keep their streets safe. It’s a night filled with food, music and games, with an emphasis on creating community connection.
“National Night Out is more than just an event; it’s a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish together,” said Sgt. Jason Jimenez. “When neighbors come together, it builds trust, creates safer streets and reinforces the strong bond between our community and those who serve it.”
While the goal is for police officers and firefighters to attend many of the events, it is not guaranteed, due to the nature of their duties. Since first responders remain on call during the evening, emergencies or service calls might prevent them from visiting every party.
National Night Out reminds residents that building strong communities is everyone’s responsibility and that when people come together, neighborhoods grow safer, stronger and more connected.
