ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - A free soccer camp, hosted by the Invictus Youth Foundation, was held July 10 and July 11 at Hal Bartholomew Sports Complex to help youth improve their soccer skills in a fun and encouraging environment.

The camp welcomed children ages 5 to 12 and ran from 8:30 to 11 a.m. each day. Day one focused on fun to encourage kids to return, while day two emphasized techniques such as dribbling, passing and shooting.

Younger participants practiced through play whereas older groups engaged in drills paired with life lessons.

Coaches Jay Fan and Kyle Pimenta helped run the camp and taught lessons on how to be a good teammate, student, son/daughter and friend.

Pimenta said they “really emphasized character choices and are trying to teach kids about having that championship mindset and having good character”.

Fan added that good character can be shown in different ways including “Being the best you can, never giving up and having perseverance.” He explained that these traits set youth on the right path by guiding them to make good decisions.

Invictus Youth Foundation also holds other camps for sports such as football, basketball, volleyball and wrestling. These camps benefit youth in the community, especially at-risk youth, by being a positive influence on children.

“The camps are designed to be completely free so kids who cannot afford camps can naturally come and have a good experience,” Fan said.

All children are welcomed, and the foundation aims to provide these positive experiences for youth to build the foundation for a successful life.

Everyone involved shares a love of sports and want to give back to the younger generations. Invictus Youth Foundation coaches and leaders hope the camp experience encourages youth to return each year.

“I just love being out here because I love soccer and it is so good seeing kids having fun and being healthy,” said Pimenta.
