Area Memorial Day Celebrations Highlighted

ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - Memorial Day Weekend in the Sacramento region brings a range of events that honor fallen military service members and offer opportunities for the community to come together. From official ceremonies and parades to family-friendly festivals and outdoor activities, the area hosts several ways to observe the holiday.
Here is a roundup of Memorial Day events happening around Sacramento and nearby cities, including details on times, locations and what attendees can expect. Whether you’re looking to pay your respects or enjoy the long weekend with loved ones, these events offer something for everyone.

Memorial Day Service and Walk for Veterans
The Elk Grove Cemetery District and Cosumnes Community Services District are partnering for an annual walk to honor local veterans on Memorial Day, May 26. The event begins at the Elk Grove Historic Cemetery at 10 a.m., followed by a walk for veterans to the parking lot of the Elk Grove Historical Society in Elk Grove Park where a community barbecue will be held. Lodi Memorial Cemetery Wreath-laying Ceremony
The Cherokee Memorial Park and Funeral Home is hosting its annual Memorial Day event, honoring those who have died in service in the United States armed forces, as well as those who are still with us. The event will include the 67th annual avenue of flags, where 1,040 large veteran flags will be flown over 8,316 smaller American flags marking the burial sites of veterans at the memorial park.
Flags will also be flown over 40 war heroes who died in service and are buried at the site.
More than 7,000 flags will be on site as well in memory of veterans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, including 43 local combat veterans.
The event will start at 10:30 a.m.
Dr. Charles R. Root of the United States Marine Corp will attend as the event’s guest speaker, while Deborah Del Mastro will perform the National Anthem.

Two Services in Rancho Murieta
The Rancho Murieta Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Scout Troop 633 are planning separate events to commemorate Memorial Day on Monday, May 26.
The VFW event will begin at 1 p.m. at the gazebo near the Rancho Murieta North Gate. The Scout flag retirement ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. at the Lake Calero fire pit.
Memorial Day Ceremony at Stockton Civic Auditorium
The city of Stockton is partnering with the VFW Luneta Post 52, American Legion: Post 16 and 803 and AMVets to host a Memorial Day service honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this nation.

Galt-Arno Cemetery Memorial Day Service
The Galt-Arno Cemetery is hosting its annual Memorial Day commemoration on May 26. The event will start at 10 a.m. and include a variety of speakers.
Following benediction and the playing of “Taps,” the event will culminate with a releasing of doves. Attendees are welcome to bring flowers for their loved ones and the deceased veterans at the site. Galt-Arno Cemetery, 14180 Joy Drive, Galt, CA 95632.
City of Sacramento Memorial Day Community Event
The City of Sacramento is hosting a community event at the Memorial Auditorium on J Street to help celebrate those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
The event stretches from 10 a.m. to noon on May 26 and will include a flag ceremony and an open house feature patriotic music on the Estey Municipal Organ. The event is free to the public. Sacramento Memorial Auditorium, 1515 J St., Sacramento, CA 95814.
Veterans Memorial Day Car Show
Head to Front Street to the California Automobile Museum for a day of classic cars, camaraderie and honoring the country’s veterans and military personnel who died in service to the United States at the Veterans Memorial Day Car Show.
The event takes place on Monday, May 26 next to the California Automobile Museum. Gates will open at 8 a.m. for registered cars to start parking, before the show kicks off at 9 a.m. The event will include food, drinks, music and 23 awards handed out to participating motorists.
Registration is $35, or $45 on the day of the event.

Sacramento County Fair
While not exactly a Memorial Day event, the Sacramento County Fair opens its gates on Saturday, May 22 to May 26 at Cal Expo.
The event will feature daily concerts, livestock shows (including those from local FFA participants) and auctions, as well as education exhibits and carnival festivities.
The fair starts at 10 a.m. each day and ends at 10 p.m., except on Monday, when it ends at 7 p.m.
Tickets are free on Military Day (May 26) for service members with a valid ID; tickets are $12 for adults; $10 for kids 12 to 16, free for kids under 11 and $8 for seniors on other days.

Memorial Day Weekend Baseball
Both the Athletics and their Single-A affiliate, the Stockton Ports, will be in action this Memorial Day Weekend.
The Athletics will take on the visiting Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game series at Sutter Health Park from May 23 to May 25 before taking a day off on Memorial Day.
Start time on Friday and Saturday is 7:05 p.m., before an early 1:05 p.m. game on Sunday.
A bit farther south, the Ports will welcome the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Single-A affiliate, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, for a three-game stretch.
Games start at 7:05 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2:09 p.m. on Sunday.
