ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - The Elk Grove Police Department released footage last week detailing a police chase that ended with an officer fatally shooting a man in early February after the man allegedly fired at least three shots at officers and rammed his vehicle into two police cars.

The man, identified as 22-year-old Jonnie Bartholomew, died after he was shot at the end of a high-speed chase throughout Sacramento on Feb. 1. A passenger in the vehicle was not harmed and was taken into custody by law enforcement.

The Elk Grove Police Department has not released the name of the officer who fired the fatal shot.

The video, released by Elk Grove Police, shows the incident and is detailed with maps showing the route of the chase, police body camera and dashcam footage.

Police say the incident began around 11:45 p.m. when Bartholomew refused to stop after an officer tried to conduct a traffic stop near Spengler and Auberry drives.

The vehicle, a Ford Explorer, driven by Bartholomew did not have license plates, according to the video.

According to the video, Bartholomew ran through multiple stop signs during the pursuit.
The police officer followed Bartholomew into a neighborhood near Florin High School and was later joined by another officer.

The video shows Bartholomew allegedly firing at the Elk Grove Police patrol vehicle behind him, and multiple times at a Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy patrol car, hitting the vehicle, according to police and images shared during the video.

Bartholomew then jumped onto Highway 99, reaching speeds of around 100 mph before taking the 47th Avenue exit and turning into oncoming traffic on Franklin Boulevard, according to police.

An Elk Grove officer was then able to stop Bartholomew’s vehicle with a PIT maneuver as Bartholomew tried to make a U-turn at 68th Street and Lemon Hill Avenue in south Sacramento.
The video shows Bartholomew attempting to drive again, but then crashing into a police SUV.
The video shows an officer calling for Bartholomew to place his hands in the air before shooting multiple times at the suspect, alongside another officer.

A second Elk Grove officer exited his patrol car and also fired at the suspect. The footage of the second officer is slightly obscured by the police vehicle due to the officer’s body-worn camera falling off his vest and onto the ground as he is leaving his vehicle, according to police.

In total about 15 shots could be heard in the video, fired from both the driver’s and passenger’s sides of the police cruiser. As officers pulled Bartholomew from the vehicle, a handgun fell to the ground and was recovered, according to police. Officers attempted to provide medical assistance, but Bartholomew died at the scene.

The Sacramento Police Department is investigating the shooting because it happened in Sacramento city limits.

The case will also be reviewed by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. The Elk Grove Police Department is conducting its own investigation to determine if their officers compiled with department policy.

It was the first officer-involved shooting for Elk Grove Police in two years. In February 2023, three Elk Grove Police Department officers wounded a man suspected of killing a Rancho Cordova woman following a vehicle pursuit.
