ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) – Local hoopers are jockeying for position at the top of the Delta League standings with just two games left on the schedule before the start of section playoffs on Feb. 18.
Below are the results from Friday’s slate of games.
Mens' Basketball
Monterey Trail 89, Cosumnes Oak 45
The Monterey Trail Mustangs soundly defeated the Wolfpack on Friday at home to stay on pace with the first-place Sheldon Huskies. The win pushed the Mustangs to 9-1 in league play to match the Huskies’ record at the top of the standings. The Mustangs are 21-5 overall.
Cosumnes Oaks remained in last place in the Delta League with a 1-10 record (6-20 overall).
Franklin 71, Elk Grove 48
The Franklin Wildcats trounced the Elk Grove Thundering Herd on Friday by nearly 25 points to inch closer to the top of the Delta League standings.
Wildcats senior Brandon Wasserman and junior Benjamin Sandy led the team in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Senior Jason Raga and junior Noah Hargrave led the Thundering herd in points.
The Wildcats improved to 7-3 (21-5 overall) while the Thundering Herd fell to 4-5 in league play (17-9 overall).
The Wildcats will look to stay in the win column when they take on the Laguna Creek Cardinals at home on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
The Thundering Herd will try to rebound against the first-place Sheldon Huskies on the road on Wednesday Feb. 12.
Laguna Creek 71, Pleasant Grove 68
The Laguna Creek Cardinals edged out the Pleasant Grove Eagles on Friday to improve to 3-7 in league play (7-19 overall). The Eagles fell to 2-8 with the loss, sixth place in the Delta League standings and 8-18 overall.
The Cardinals head to Franklin High School on Wednesday to take on the Wildcats while the Eagles will look to upset the Mustangs when they invite them to their home court the same day.
Bye: Sheldon
The Sheldon Huskies enjoyed a night off on Friday before heading back to action on Monday when they handed a lopsided defeat to the Sacred Heart Prep Gators in nonleague play. The Huskies improved to 17-9 overall and remained at the top of the Delta League standings at 9-1.
Women’s Basketball
Monterey Trail 49, Cosumnes Oaks 29
The Mustangs remained undefeated in the Delta League with a 49-29 win on the road over the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack. The Mustangs improved to 10-0 in league play (17-5 overall) and will take on the Pleasant Grove Eagles on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
Pleasant Grove 43, Laguna Creek 42
In a tight matchup, the Pleasant Grove Eagles edged out the Laguna Creek Cardinals to remain in second place in the Delta League standings with just two games remaining in league play.
Junior Kate Myers paced her team with 15 points and six assists, followed by sophomore Anniyah Banks who came just a point shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
For Laguna Creek, Junior Jestine Tofi sank 12 points, while freshman Alyson Aguirre-Hernandez added 11 points of her own.
The Eagles improved to 8-2 in league play with the win (17-7 overall) while the third-place Cardinals fell to 7-3 (16-10 overall).
The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday against the undefeated Mustangs at home.
The Cardinals will look to bounce back against the Wildcats on the road.
