Soccer Roundup for Friday, Feb. 7

ELK GROVE, CA – The Delta League soccer schedule wrapped up for the most part on Friday, bringing the final standings into view just a few days before the start of the postseason.

Below are the scores and standings from Friday, Feb. 7 for Delta League matchups.

CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs will begin on Feb. 14 for the boys and Feb. 15 for the girls. The bracket will be released on Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Men’s Soccer

Elk Grove 2, Monterey Trail 1

The Elk Grove Thundering Herd finished its season on Friday with a close win over the Monterey Trail Mustangs on the road.

Sophomores Brody Da Silva and Kainoa Hernandez scored a goal a piece to push the Thundering Herd to victory and wrap up their season with a 6-5-1 record (7-10-4 overall) and a fourth-place finish in the Delta League.

Monterey Trail finished just behind the Thundering Herd with a 4-5-3 record in league matches and a 11-10-4 overall record.

Franklin 6, Cosumnes Oaks 1

The Franklin Wildcats continued their winning ways on Friday with a 6-1 thrashing of the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack at home. The Wildcats won with a balanced offensive attack led by Senior Diego Villasenor, who had a goal and two assists. Seniors Miles Jones and Mason Reyes also scored alongside juniors Adnan Mohammad, Marcos Zarates and Landon Roberson.

The Wildcats wrapped up their season in first place with an impressive 11-1 record (17-2-1 overall). The Wolfpack were on the other end of the spectrum, falling to 0-10-2 in Delta League matchups and winless overall at 0-13-2.

Pleasant Grove 6, Laguna Creek 0

Senior Julian Sevilla led the Eagles to victory with three goals as his squad put a bow on its season with a solid victory at home over the Laguna Creek Cardinals.

Senior Josha Dyer, junior Maisum Ghani and sophomore Max Tran Cordero added a goal apiece.

The Eagles finished up 8-4 (11-7 overall) good enough for second place in the Delta League and a four-game win streak.

The Cardinals fell to 2-10 (5-15 overall) and sixth place in the league.

Bye: Sheldon

Sheldon finished up its season on Wednesday with a 2-0 victory over the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack. The win gave the Huskies second place in the Delta League with a 7-3-2 (9-4-3 overall) record. Senior Raghib Jami and junior Johann Aguilar scored Sheldon’s two points on the evening.

 Women’s Soccer

Cosumnes Oaks 1, Franklin 0

The Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack finished its season on a high note after taking down the first-place Franklin Wildcats on Friday.

Freshman Penelope Lake scored the lone goal for Cosumnes Oaks to push the team to 7-2-3 (11-6-4 overall) and a third-place finish in the Delta League.

The Wildcats remained in first place in league play with the loss, falling to 9-2-1 (11-6-2 overall).

Monterey Trail 2, Elk Grove 0

The Monterey Trail Mustangs edged out the Elk Grove Thundering Herd on Wednesday with a 2-0 victory on the road.

The Mustangs held onto fourth place in the Delta League with the win, finishing with a respectable 5-6-1 league record (12-9-4 overall). The Mustangs thrashed Rio Linda High School on Saturday 7-1 at home to add to their nonleague record.

Senior Jada Pinkey and Junior Arianna Ramirez-Cortez each netted a goal for the Mustangs to seal the win for their team.

The Thundering Herd finished its season in last place in the Delta League with a winless record at 0-11-1 (1-13-3 overall).

Bye: Sheldon  

The Sheldon Huskies finished their season on Wednesday, Feb. 5 with an 8-1 loss to the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack at home.

Note: Laguna Creek and Pleasant Grove will play their final game of the postseason on Tuesday at Laguna Creek.
