ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) – Local hoopers are jockeying for position at the top of the Delta League standings with just three games left on the schedule before the start of section playoffs on Feb. 18.
Below are the results from Wednesday’s slate of games.
Men's Basketball
Elk Grove, 58, Pleasant Grove 44
Elk Grove High School improved to 4-4 (17-8 overall) after defeating Pleasant Grove in the “Battle of the Grove” on Wednesday, Feb. 5.
Elk Grove seniors Jason Raga and Danny Dennaoui led the team in scoring with 11 and 12 points, respectively. Junior Alphonso Moore Jr. added eight rebounds.
Pleasant Grove fell to 1-8 (7-18 overall) with the loss.
Elk Grove will take on the Franklin Wildcats on Friday at home. Pleasant Grove will travel to Laguna Creek on Friday to face the Cardinals.
Sheldon 90, Franklin 52
The Sheldon Huskies grabbed their ninth straight Delta League contest victory on Wednesday, Feb. 5, soundly defeating another standout Delta League program, the Franklin Wildcats.
The win pushed the Huskies into first place in the Delta League, edging out the Monterey Trail, which had a bye on Wednesday.
Franklin kept its grips on third place in the Delta League, falling to 6-3 (20-5 overall).
Sheldon will next take the court on Feb. 12. Franklin will play Elk Grove on Friday.
Laguna Creek 71, Cosumnes Oaks 58
The Laguna Creek Cardinals defeated the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack on Wednesday to improve to 3-6 (7-17 overall). The Wolfpack fell to (1-9) (6-19 overall).
The Wolfpack will look to finish their season strong when they take on the mighty Monterey Trail Mustangs on Friday.
Laguna Creek will try to build a little win streak when they take on the Pleasant Grove Eagles on Friday.
Bye: Monterey Trail
Monterey Trail will look to tie the Sheldon Huskies in the win column on Friday in its matchup at Pleasant Grove High School. Monterey Trail enters the game with an 8-1 record in Delta League play.
Women’s Basketball
Monterey Trail 50, Vista del Lago 34
The Monterey Trail Mustangs continued their winnings ways on Wednesday by defeating Folsom’s Vista del Lago High School in nonleague play for their 11th consecutive win. The Mustangs remained on top of the Delta League standings on Wednesday with a perfect 9-0 record. They improved to 16-5 overall.
Monterey Trail will look to make it 12 in a row when it faces the Wolfpack on Friday at home.
Laguna Creek 52, Cosumnes Oaks 31
The Laguna Creek Cardinals improved to 7-2 (16-9 overall), second in the Delta League, after defeating the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack, their fifth win in their past six games.
Junior Jestine Tofi led the team in scoring with 16 points, while seniors Trinity Thao and Ananda Oto-Zachary both added 15 points.
The Wolfpack dropped to 3-7 (11-14 overall) with the loss.
Laguna Creek will invite the Pleasant Grove Eagles to its home court on Friday for another Delta League game. Cosumnes Oaks will travel to Monterey Trail.
Sheldon 54, Franklin 41
Freshman Brooklin Kimmons continued to light up the scoreboard with 18 points on 6-of-9 from the field in a winning effort for the Sheldon Huskies.
Freshman Saniah Wiley chipped in with a double-double, scoring 14 points and snatching 11 rebounds. Junior Mariah Smith led the team in rebounds with 13, followed by sophomore Kayloni Knowlton with 10.
The Huskies improved to 5-5 (15-10 overall), while the Wildcats fell to 2-7 (3-19 overall).
The Huskies will have a bye on Friday before returning to action on Wednesday to play Elk Grove. Franklin will play Elk Grove on Friday at home.
Pleasant Grove 53, Elk Grove 13
Pleasant Grove soundly defeated the Elk Grove Thundering Herd on Wednesday for its third win in a row, improving to 7-2 (16-7 overall), good enough for third place in the Delta League. The Thundering Herd remains winless in league games with the loss, falling to 0-10 (5-16 overall).
Elk Grove will have a chance to break that losing streak on Friday against the Franklin Wildcats. Pleasant Grove will look for its eighth win at home against the Laguna Creek Cardinals.
