Soccer Roundup for Wednesday, Feb. 5

ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) – With just two games left to play in Delta League, local soccer squads are scrambling for position for playoff seeding before the start of section playoffs on Feb. 15.

Check out the latest scores and findings from Wednesday’s matchups below.

Men’s Soccer

Sheldon 2, Cosumnes Oaks 0

The Sheldon Huskies wrapped up their soccer season on Wednesday, Feb. 5 with a victory over the Wolfpack. The win keeps them in second place in the Delta League with a 7-3-2 (9-4-3 overall) record. Senior Raghib Jami and junior Johann Aguilar scored Sheldon’s two points on the evening.

The Wolfpack remained winless in the loss, falling to 0-9-2 (0-12-2 overall).

The Wolfpack will finish their season on Friday against the first-place Franklin Wildcats on Friday.

 Pleasant Grove 3, Elk Grove 0

The Pleasant Grove Eagles shut out the Thundering Herd with a 3-0 victory to inch closer to second place in the Delta League standings. The Eagles have won five of their last six games, last losing to the Franklin Wildcats on Jan. 24.

The Eagles improved to 7-4 (10-7 overall), while the Thundering Herd dropped their fifth Delta League matchup, falling to 5-5-1 (6-10-4 overall).

Both squads will wrap up their seasons on Friday, with the Eagles against the Laguna Creek Cardinals and the Thundering Herd against the Monterey Trail Mustangs. 

 Franklin 8, Laguna Creek 1

The Franklin Wildcats maintained their grip on first place in the Delta League after soundly defeating the Laguna Creek Cardinals on the road on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

The Wildcats poured it on in the second half when they scored seven out of their eight goals. The Wildcats have allowed just five goals against Delta League opponents and 11 goals total across all matchups. The Wildcats improved to 10-1 (16-2-1 overall).

The Cardinals dropped to 2-9 (5-14 overall).

Franklin will look to stay on its winning path on Friday against the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack on the road, while Laguna Creek will wrap up its season in a matchup against Pleasant Grove.

Bye: Monterey Trail

Monterey Trail will wrap up its season at home against the Thundering Herd on Friday. The Mustangs will enter the matchup at 4-4-3 (11-9-4 overall), fifth place in the Delta League.

 Women’s Soccer

Cosumnes Oaks 8, Sheldon 1

The Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack soundly defeated the Sheldon Huskies on Wednesday, Feb. 5 to improve to 6-2-3 (10-6-4 overall). Cosumnes Oaks Senior Jalana Kimber led her squad in scoring with four goals. Senior Kailana Bursiaga added two assists.

Sheldon finished its season at 2-7-3 (3-12-4 overall) after the loss. Senior Gabriella Uribe scored the lone goal for Sheldon.

Cosumnes Oaks will finish its season on Friday against the first-place Franklin Wildcats.

 Franklin 0, Laguna Creek 0

The Franklin Wildcats and the Laguna Creek Cardinals played to a standstill on Wednesday, Feb. 5 on Franklin’s home pitch. The tie was Franklin’s first of the season, and Laguna’s fourth. The result keeps the Wildcats in first place at 9-1-1 (11-5-2 overall), while the Cardinals dropped to 3-4-4 (7-5-6 overall).

Franklin will take on the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack on Friday, while Laguna Creek will wrap up against Pleasant Grove on Feb. 11.

 Bye: Monterey Trail

Monterey Trail had a bye on Feb. 5 and will return to action on Friday in its final Delta League matchup of the year against the Thundering Herd on the road. Monterey Trail will enter the match at 4-6-1 (10-9-4 overall).
