Basketball Roundup for Monday, Feb. 2

ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) With just a few weeks left before the start of section playoffs, Monday, Feb. 2 featured another rousing slate of Delta League hardwood action.

Check out the latest scores and findings from Monday’s matchups below.

 Men’s Basketball

Monterey Trail 70, Laguna Creek 53

Monterey Trail senior Ahzeil Franklin led the Mustangs to victory with 16 points and eight rebounds. Senior Rashawn Inglemon came in second in points with 14. Senior Derron White dished out seven assists, while also adding 13 points of his own and four steals.

The win pushed Monterey Trail to 8-1 (20-5 overall). Laguna Creek fell to 2-6 (6-17 overall)

 Elk Grove 67, Cosumnes Oaks 48

Elk Grove junior Noah Hargrave was responsible for nearly half of the Thundering Herd’s scoring after filling the scoreboard with 31 points, 18 of which came from beyond the three-point arch. Junior Alphonso Moore Jr. was just a rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Elk Grove improved to 4-5 (16-8 overall), while Cosumnes Oaks dropped to 1-8 (6-18 overall).

 Sheldon 72, Pleasant Grove, 54

The Sheldon Huskies improved to 8-1 in league play to keep a tie at the top of the Delta League standings with the Monterey Trail Mustangs.

The Mustangs and the Huskies are 1-1 against each other in league play this season. The Huskies soundly defeated the Mustangs on Jan. 29, 67-51, but dropped their first matchup in a close game earlier that same month, 65-62.

The Eagles fell to 1-7 (7-17 overall).

 Bye Week: Franklin High School

The Franklin Wildcats had a bye on Monday, Feb. 3, but will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 5 to take on the Sheldon Huskies. The wildcats enter the match-up with a 20-4 record, 6-2 in Delta League play.

The Sheldon Huskies will look to avoid falling to .500 in away-game matchups and improve on their 8-1 Delta League record with just four games remaining before the start of section playoffs.

 Women’s Basketball

Monterey Trail 66, Laguna Creek 43

Monterey Trail remained undefeated in league matchups on Monday after defeating the Cardinals at home. The Mustangs will head into another non-league matchup on Feb. 5 against Folsom’s Vista de Lago High School on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Laguna Creek fell to 6-2 (15-9 overall), tied for second in the Delta League standings. 

 Cosumnes Oaks 47, Elk Grove 25

Elk Grove’s woes continued after falling to Cosumnes Oaks on Monday, Feb. 3. Elk Grove has dropped all nine of their Delta League games this season. Cosumnes Oaks improved to 11-13 (3-6) in league play.  

 Pleasant Grove 65, Sheldon 61

The Pleasant Grove Eagles edged out the Huskies on Monday to jump into third place in the Delta League with a 6-2 record (15-7 overall).

Sheldon freshman Brooklin Kimmons lit up the scoreboard with 31 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Saniah Wiley added 13 points of her own.

 Bye: Franklin High School

Franklin High School was off on Feb. 3 but will look to improve on their 3-18 (2-6) record on Wednesday, Feb. 5 by taking on the Sheldon Huskies. The Huskies enter the game in fourth place in the Delta League with a 4-5 record (14-10 overall).
