ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - With approximately three weeks left in the regular flag football season, what is for many schools their first season has been a success.

Many student-athletes are learning to play a new game and adjusting to intricate rules and others are thriving showing their athletic abilities from other sports carry over into flag football.

Some teams post an impressive undefeated record, while others are getting hot at the right time as playoffs approach now that many have adjusted to this game.

Bradshaw Christian: This is not the Pride’s first season of flag football, according to MaxPreps.

Although no scores were reported, the Pride this year have been able to compete as they currently post a 3-5 overall record and a 3-4 record in the Sierra Valley Conference League.

At the time of publication, they sit in fourth place out of five teams but with the same record as the Argonaut Mustangs.

The Pride have two remaining games with the Liberty Ranch Hawks, who they lost to earlier in the season, as well as games remaining with the Galt Warriors, the Mustangs and the Amador Buffaloes.

The leaders of this team offensively are Madison Sample-Martinez with 169 passing yards, Jordyn Polite with 88 rushing yards and Ava Clarida with 73 receiving yards.

Defensively, Clarida leads the team with 10 total tackles while Gianna Tornatore and Lauren Hatcher each have an interception.

Cosumnes Oaks: The second-place team in the Delta League belongs to the Wolfpack, as their team is filled with athletes who have adapted to flag football well.

Their first game in school history was lost to the Florin Panthers, but six days later they faced them again and defeated them by a score of 8-6 as they learned the game and settled into the season.

One of the athletes who stands out on this team is Abby Greene, a captain on the team who carries her soccer skills onto the flag football field as she showcases her quickness, speed and ability to cut in and out to evade defenders.

One of the primary targets for the Wolfpack quarterback, Avery Nogosek, is wide receiver Jazlene Ramos who head coach George Smith knew was talented and wanted to give the ball to Ramos.

The losses the Wolfpack has in league play are from the Pleasant Grove Eagles and the Laguna Creek Cardinals.

The Wolfpack's remaining schedule includes the Sheldon Huskies, Franklin Wildcats, Elk Grove Thundering Herd, the Cardinals and the Eagles as they look to make a splash in the playoffs.

Elk Grove: According to MaxPreps, there were no pre-season games to prepare for the Delta League for the Thundering Herd.

They dove right into the season where they currently have a 2-9 overall record and a 1-5 league record.

Their wins have come against the Franklin Yellowjackets of Stockton by a score of 39-6 and in league against the Monterey Trail Mustangs by a score of 7-0.

The Herd has not entered any stats on MaxPreps and will play their remaining games against the Eagles, Cardinals, Huskies, Wolfpack, Mustangs and the Wildcats.

Florin: In a shock to many at Florin High School, former football and baseball coach at the school, Mike Harris, decided to return to coach flag football.

According to the Panthers flag football website, Harris returned when he found out 49ers legend was coaching his daughters flag football team in Menlo, as well as his friend and former colleague George Smith of Cosumnes Oaks was coaching too.

After leaving Florin after 2012 when he was a part of the football coaching staff, Harris coached baseball at Elk Grove High School.

With many athletes coming from a volleyball, soccer and basketball backgrounds, there are also those who have never played sports but regardless have posted an 8-7 overall record and a 4-4 in the Greater Sacramento League.

Offensively, the Panthers are led by quarterback Jayda Lewis who has thrown for 1427 yards and running back Erin Foster who has rushed for 521 yards with a team-leading eight touchdowns.

Defensively, the Panthers leader in total tackles is Paris Jones with 82, Foster leads the team with five sacks and Foster and Janiya Brister lead the team with nine interceptions.

In the last two weeks of the season, the Panthers have three games in a row scheduled in both weeks as they look to improve and reach the playoffs as they currently sit in fifth place out of eight teams.

Franklin: The third-place team with a 6-4 overall record and a 4-3 Delta League record that sits behind the Eagles and Wolfpack is the Franklin Wildcats.

The Wildcats at the time of publication had a four-game winning streak, which started after breaking a four-game losing streak.

The leaders of this team offensively include Kalani Phearson with 1426 passing yards, Joy Jones with 242 rushing yards, Aletha Singleton with 530 receiving yards along with 11 touchdowns.

On the other side of the ball, Tochi Ojije leads the team with 47 total tackles, Singleton has nine interceptions, and Ojije, Jones and Aisha Ariwoola each have a sack.

The Wildcats have a packed schedule in the last three weeks as they have eight games left in the regular season which includes three non-league games against Dixon Rams, the Wheatland Pirates and the Sacramento Dragons.

Laguna Creek: Sitting in the penultimate place of the Delta League are the 5-10 overall and 2-5 league record Laguna Creek Cardinals.

In their first league matchup, head coach Courtney Pfau said that they struggled to move the ball forward, which could be a reason as to why the Cardinals sit in sixth place of the Delta League.

One of the team captains of the Cardinals is Annalise Mendonsa who at the running back position was constantly looking for a hole to be able to drive her team forward in that game against the Eagles.

The Cardinals look to finish out their season against the Huskies, Herd, Mustangs, Wildcats, and Wolfpack.

The two league wins the Cardinals have were against the Herd and the Mustangs, two teams they will face in the last three weeks of the season.

Monterey Trail: A team who’s had to work hard for their wins are the Mustangs, as they haven’t won a game this season with more than a six-point difference.

The Mustangs are 3-4 with wins against the Wildcats by a score of 7-6, against the Cardinals by a score of 20-14 and the Huskies by a score of 20-18.

In their remaining schedule, they will have one more go at the Wildcats, Cardinals and the Huskies to try and add to their win total this season.

The Mustangs do not have stats entered on MaxPreps for their season.

Pleasant Grove: Unarguably, the most dominant team in the area is the Pleasant Grove Eagles as they sit with a perfect 7-0 record at the time of publication in the Delta League.

Along with being the most dominant team, they are led by the most dominant player of the area as well with Kate Myers.

According to MaxPreps, Myers ranks eleventh nationally with 17 interceptions on defense, while she has 750 rushing yards, 1524 passing yards and 11 total touchdowns.

She comes from a basketball background and it shows as she showcases it on the flag football field, as head coach of the Eagles Jeremiah Taylor gives her high praise.

“She’s kind of the heartbeat of this team. When she goes, we go. She’s extremely athletic, very intelligent and her basketball background carries over for her in this arena. She’s great, great to be around, and she’s doing such a good job for us.”

One of their losses was against the Christian Brothers Falcons, the reigning and inaugural CIF Sac-Joaquin Division 2 champions, as the Eagles didn’t shy away from playing good competition.

“When we scheduled CB, we wanted to schedule the champs. We wanted to see what it looked like to get to the mountaintop, and they’re the standard at this point,” Taylor said.

Since then, the Eagles are riding a seven-game winning streak at the time of publication.

The Eagles have five remaining games as they look to make noise in their first season in the playoffs.

Sheldon: Rounding out the Delta League, are the Sheldon Huskies who sit in fifth place with an overall and league record of 2-5.

There are no stats entered into MaxPreps for the Huskies.

The Huskies did not have any preseason games and have won two games against the Cardinals and the Herd.

The closest game that they had that resulted in a loss was a 20-18 loss at the hands of the Mustangs.

The Huskies will end their season with five league games and two non-league games against the Florin Panthers.

Valley: The other team in the Greater Sacramento League besides the Panthers is the Valley Vikings, who hold a 5-6 overall record and a 5-3 league record.

They sit in fourth place and are led by Aneisha Wright with 1,333 passing yards, Jordyn Gibson with 358 receiving yards, Danae Dixon with 282 rushing yards and Wright also leads the team on defense with six interceptions.

Earlier in the season, they beat the Panthers by a score of 18-0, yet in their most recent matchup they took the loss to them by a score of 14-2 to end a three-game winning streak.

The Vikings look to get back in the win column in order to get into the playoffs.
