ELK GROVE, CA (MPG) - With their 19-14 win over the Franklin Wildcats, the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack’s Girls Flag Football team remained undefeated in the Delta League tied with the Pleasant Grove Eagles for the league lead.
Wolfpack head coach George Smith said that their pass game is finally clicking which will help his team be competitive.
“Our passing game is starting to click now and just being new to flag football we try and run it and we try and throw it a little, but to be competitive you have to be able to throw it. So, we're working on that and it's getting better,” Smith said.
Quarterback for the Wolfpack, Avery Nogosek, threw three touchdown passes for 19 points after two extra point attempts failed and Smith said she’s getting better every game.
Their running back, Abby Greene, several times was pulled by her jersey for penalties to be stopped from helping her team move downfield.
“Her ability to run the football is good and she's very good at catching it too,” Smith said.  “A lot of these girls are soccer players and they decided to come out and play flag football so multi-sport athletes that's what we want,” Smith said.
The biggest connection for Nogosek on the night was wide receiver Jazlene Ramos, who caught two touchdowns passes.
“I played receiver in high school and college and she can catch, and that's who we get the ball to. She's solid and she doesn’t say much, just does her job,” Smith said.
As for the Wildcats, they clawed their way back into the game after going down 19-7 thanks to quarterback Kalani Phearson.
“Kalani has done a great job stepping into that role and learning as we go. So super proud of the effort she's put in, and she's made some really good ways for this year,” head coach of the Wildcats Mike Cody said.
On the ground, the Wildcats were effective, too, as Joy Jones was getting downfield to allow her team to keep the game close.
“Joy is extremely fast. She's a track star in the springtime and she's a freshman, but she's very experienced in the track and field world, so we're just trying to capitalize on her skill set which is she's fast, she's super athletic and she can also catch the ball really well,” Cody said.
The Wildcats have been consistent on defense, Cody said, and were able to keep them in the game to get within a score of taking the lead.
“We've played very well defensively. We've been able to use our height and our athleticism really well and our girls are pretty aggressive on defense. They go for the ball,” Cody said.
Next up for the Wildcats are the Laguna Creek Cardinals and a non-league game against the Wheatland Pirates as the Wildcats look to improve on their 1-3 league record.
“The good news is I think our spirits are still high because we've been in every game. We've lost all three games by one possession and so we know that if we get that tip pass or we catch that pass on offense that the game can flip pretty quickly,” Cody said.
As for the Wolfpack, their next matchups are against the Elk Grove Thundering Herd and the Laguna Creek Cardinals as they look to remain undefeated in league play.
“It's a good group of girls and it's been a lot of fun. We work hard at practice and we come out trying to give them a good experience here and that's the main focus,” Smith said.
