ELK GROVE (MPG) - In a clean 3-0 sweep against league rivals, the McClatchy Lions, the Monterey Trail Mustangs were able to take the victory on March 14 to move to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in Metro League play for first place.
For head coach Kingsley Claudy, he believes that the key to their victory against the Lions was due to how tough they served.
“We served really tough and we got the other team out of system so we were able to make the transition from defense to offense but I think serving tough was the most important thing we did tonight,” Claudy said.
The offense for the Mustangs was led by junior Dehryn Brown who finished this matchup with 22 kills and two assists which was highlighted by his coach.
“He’s an amazing athlete, jumps very high, he hits the ball very hard , he’s a smart player, he can take a full swing and keep the ball in play,” Claudy said. “He is a very skilled and experienced player and all those attributes make him a very good volleyball player.”
Brown was not alone as he had the help from senior Mark Lin with 30 assists.
The previous day the Mustangs took another victory in five sets in a road game against Whitney which may have carried over into the game against the Lions, Claudy said.
“We had a big win last night in five sets against Whitney so we may have come out a little flat so I would’ve liked a little bit more energy tonight but we were able to maintain our composure,” Claudy said.
Despite tough league matches coming up on their schedule, Claudy describes being undefeated in league thus far as “awesome” and he said he’s interested to see how things go for his team down the stretch.
