Gilroy (MPG) - Several area wrestlers competed Jan. 20 at the Mid-Cal Wrestling Tournament at Gilroy.

As a team, Elk Grove took sixth place behind Gilroy, Tuttle, Okla., De LaSalle, Frontier and Folsom High Schools

Octavio Negrete placed fourth at 116 pounds. Josiah Sandoval was second at 123 pounds. Also taking second was Nick Bulanin at 129 pounds. Paul Johnson grabbed fourth at 147 pounds. At 153 pounds Jacob Briggs placed third

Sheldon’s Noah Daniels placed second at 160 pounds. At 288 pounds Laguna Creek’s Declan Follette placed second while Elk Grove’s Gabe Fernandez was sixth.

In the girls competition, Sheldon’s Kaydance Vang placed sixth at 103 pounds, Laguna Creek’s Leanna Luchico was fourth at 113 pounds and her teammate, Enjolie Naputi, was sixth at 128 pounds. Liliae Naputi, also of Laguna Creek, took fifth at 133 pounds. Oujen Bortai was eighth at 138 pounds. Sheldon’s Chrystina Ballejos placed third at 173 pounds. . Maya Brown of Laguna Creek took fifth place at 193 pounds.

Delta League duals

For the 21st straight season Elk Grove has won the Delta League championship in wrestling. On Jan. 16 the Thundering Herd defeated Davis, 74-0, and Franklin, 58-9, in a double dual. They wrapped up the league championship on Jan. 23 with a 64-7 win over Sheldon and a 68-9 win over Jesuit in a double dual at Sheldon High School.

Elk Grove and Franklin, which finished second in the Delta League, will now represent the Delta at the Sac-Joaquin Section Team Dual championships Saturday at Lincoln High School in Stockton.
