Weekend Work Finished in Record Time

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, CA (MPG) - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and American Civil Constructors West Coast LLC finished this weekend’s work eight hours ahead of schedule.

Crews were able to reopen the on-ramp from N Street to southbound State Route 51 (Business 80/ Capital City Freeway), and the connector ramps from southbound SR-51 (Business 80/ Capital City Freeway) to westbound and eastbound U.S. Highway 50 by 9:00 p.m.

The ramps were originally scheduled to reopen by 5:00 a.m., Monday, November 15, and despite the fog and humidity, crews replaced the joint header on the bridge deck and finished the grinding and paving in record time.

Thank you to motorists for your patience and following the signed detours. You allowed our crews to finish the work in record time by providing them the safe space they needed to complete the operations. Caltrans also thanks the California Highway Patrol for monitoring the work zone. This weekend’s work would not have been a success without the support of our local emergency responders, Sacramento Regional Transit District and the City of Sacramento for their collaboration and cooperation.

Crews closed the N Street on-ramp and the connector ramps on Friday, November 12 around 9 p.m. and worked around the clock. The weekend ramp closures were necessary for crews to safely perform the work and lessen the impact to the neighboring communities, hospitals, and the traveling public. Rather than performing nightly closures for several weeks, the contractor was able to complete the work in two days. The contractor used a Hot Mix Asphalt Super-Pave to extend the service life of the highway and finished this weekend’s work before the forecasted rain hits the area.

This weekend’s work is part of a $4.5 million project to improve the state highways at various locations on US-50, SR-51, Interstate 80 and SR-99 in the counties of Placer, Butte and Sacramento. Caltrans is taking preventative measures to fix California’s aging roadways so the department can continue to provide a safe route and help reduce wet-weather related collisions. The project was awarded to American Civil Constructors West Coast LLC, and construction began September 7. This is the second time the contractor has performed a weekend closure and finished the work ahead of schedule. The contractor performed an extended weekend closure in October and completed the work 17-hours ahead of schedule. The project is scheduled to be completed in mid-December 2021.
