RIO LINDA, CA (MPG) - We met Maceo (pronounced (MA- K- EO) Hart Kapic in March of this year.  I took a tour of his farm, located on/at Gibson Ranch.  It was pre-season time. First of March, means getting the fields tilled up and the seeds bought. Now, the first week of August, it’s harvesting time.  From now until the fall, each Saturday morning from 8 to 12, he and other vendors, will be selling their fresh produce or products.  Located, in front, of the Gibson Ranch entrance. There is plenty of space for you and other vendors to come join the Sat. morning fun. Or, maybe you want to have your yard sale there!  All you have to do is contact Maceo at: [email protected] or call at: 916-241-6738 for more information.

I went over Saturday to see and hopefully taste, how the growing had gone and is going.  Beautiful, was the table set up.

Right next to his stall, I walked over and met Char Berta of C&G Bees selling her bee colonies honey.  Sitting with her was Howard Mann. Char told me Howard started her on her Bee Quest. She only had one beehive when she met Howard, now she and her husband Gary have 12 hives spread over the Rio Linda, Elverta and North Highlands area.

“Did you know,” she said. “Bees will fly up to 3 miles to pollinate plants? Watch a movie called, ‘The Pollinators’”.

She highly recommended this, if you’ve any interest in bees, or their process to grow our food. It’s added to my bucket list.

I walked back to Maceo, who had several customers. Even, a couple riding bikes stopped, buying those gorgeous tomatoes.

I asked Maceo if he sold anywhere else besides this Saturday market?

“Yes, I would say it is 50/50 between selling wholesale, the home deliveries, and the farmers markets. I also sell my fresh produce to the local School District’s in our area.”

“I sell meat pigs and some cattle, All, organically raised. There is a list of my products on my website.” He was excited to tell me, next week he and his helpers will be planting their fall crops of broccoli, cauliflower, turnips, carrots and garbanzo beans.

His main concern, as is all of ours, is “Let it rain, a lot, please.” We can all relate, been too many years of drought. Take care of yourself and smile.
