The Falcons hosted Butte College on Monday evening for the 2017 home opener at Falcon Field, but the Roadrunners spoiled the fun as they battered the FLC pitching staff, 14-4. Even the potent Falcon offense sputtered in this one as they managed just seven hits, five of them singles, while striking out 12 times. On the positive side, hot-hitting freshman right fielder Carson McCusker added two more doubles as he maintained his .500 batting average through three games. With 18 total bases in 16 at bats, he’s sporting a ridiculous 1.625 OPS (on-base plus slugging). Catcher Mason Allen also had two singles to raise his batting average to .462.

With rain forecasted for later this week, the Falcons have adjusted this week’s schedule and will face DeAnza College today (Wednesday 2/1) in a home doubleheader with game times scheduled for 2:00 pm and 5:30 pm.

Women’s Tennis

The Falcons dominated sister college Cosumnes River on Tuesday afternoon with an 8-1 victory at the FLC Tennis Complex. Sophomore Michelle Doyle won the ‘grit’ award with a hard-fought victory at #3 singles after losing the first set, 2-6, 6-2, 10-5. Freshman Erin Cline won both her matches as well, pairing with Abriana Rowe for an 8-3 win at #1 doubles before winning her #2 singles match, 6-3, 6-2. FLC’s #2 doubles team of Michelle Doyle and Ariele Frank defeated the CRC team, 8-3.

Not to be outdone by the women, the Falcon men shut out Cosumnes River 9-0. All six Falcons players won in both singles and doubles while not allowing any CRC player, except at #2 singles, to win more than two games in any set. Falcon freshman Jeff Chale provided the suspenseful match after dropping the first set, but rallied to outlast his opponent 3-6, 6-3, 10-4. Sophomore Alex Bychkoviak had a perfect afternoon as he did not lose a single game in either his singles (6-0, 6-0) or doubles (8-0) matches,

The FLC softball team made their 2017 season debut at San Jose City College on Tuesday afternoon, but fell to the Jaguars. 8-0. The Falcons’ offense couldn’t do much against the San Jose pitcher, who allowed just two FLC hits. Still, there were bright spots for the Falcons, including catcher Gabby Fruciano’s double in the second inning. Freshman pitcher Lauren Orris was effective in her debut as she allowed just two earned runs, but was doomed by some poor Falcon defense in the fourth inning. The Falcons next game will be at Chabot College in Hayward on Tuesday, February 7.
