While COVID-19 may have prevented the Robert E. Waters Memorial Elementary School Basketball Tournament from taking place this year, the beneficial effects of the tournament have continued. Isabelle Waters, Waters’ widow and the director of the Robert E. Waters Memorial Scholarship Fund, gave out scholarship money from the tournament to two college students who were coached by her husband as kids.
Josh Williams and Xavier Brown, who are both attending college and are Sheldon High School graduates, received $500 scholarships apiece from Waters herself. Both Williams and Brown had played for Robert Waters at Irene B. West. The scholarship fund provided for another group of people related to Irene B. West Elementary as well: Brian McNeil, principal of Irene B. West, accepted $1,000 to be given to the school’s P.E. teachers.
