Five Sacramento State baseball players were named to the all-Western Athletic Conference first and second teams, the league announced Tuesday.
First baseman Ryan Walstad, designated hitter Matt Smith, and starting pitcher Scott Randall were each named to the WAC’s all-league first team. Catcher Dawsen Bacho and third baseman Steven Moretto each received second team all-WAC honors.
This year, 2021, marks the eighth time in the last nine seasons that Sacramento State has had multiple players selected to the all-conference first team. It is also the eighth time in the last nine seasons in which at least four Hornets were named all-conference overall.
Sacramento State received a record-high seven all-conference honors in both 2014 and, more recently, 2018.
Sacramento State next turns its attention to next week’s Western Athletic Conference Tournament, which starts Wednesday, May 26 at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Arizona.
The Hornets enter the six-team, double-elimination tournament as the conference’s number two seed after finishing the regular season 34-20 overall and 22-14 in the Western Athletic Conference.
Sacramento State is the reigning WAC Tournament champion, having won in historic fashion in 2019, the last time the tournament was held. They’ll look to defend their title starting with a second-round game next Thursday at 3 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday’s UT Rio Grande Valley/Utah Valley matchup.
