R. Chalmers Gage, Sr.

July 15, 1918 - January 23, 2019

Chalmers was one of 4 children born to Norman Gage and Mattie (Chalmers) Gage.  He lived his entire life in Elk Grove as a 4th generation Elk Grove native. He was a class of 1937 graduate of Elk Grove High School where he played football, baseball, basketball, and was a member of the Future Farmers of America.  In 1942 he married Anabel Brady and they went on to have three children.

Chalmers worked on the Gage family dairy farm with his father and brother, Charles. They raised registered Ayrshire dairy cattle that they successfully exhibited at county fairs throughout California under the Braeloch Ayrshire Farm name.

For 11 years Chalmers operated heavy equipment for Charlie Bartholomew. He leveled land in the Elk Grove area and built runways at McClellan AFB during WW2.

Chalmers was an Elk Grove Fire Department volunteer fireman from 1946-1973. In 1973 he became a permanent fireman until his retirement in 1983 as a Captain. He continued to work operating hay equipment for his friend, Jim Boras, until his second retirement at the age of 92.

Chalmers enjoyed travelling with his wife to Yuma, AZ; Alaska; and spending summers with his family at Lake of the Woods, OR. Chalmers enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and camping. He was an avid baseball fan. He played in several hardball and fast pitch softball leagues until the age of 50 with a .400 batting average.

Last summer Chalmers celebrated his 100th birthday with his family and friends at the home he grew up in. He was very proud to have received a visit by Mayor Ly who acknowledged his life-long contribution to the Elk Grove community. Mayor Ly presented Chalmers with a key to the City of Elk Grove.

Chalmers was preceded in death by his wife, Anabel Gage, and his son, Roy Gage.  He is survived by his son Richard Gage, Jr. (wife Lyn Gage); daughter Valoyce Gage (husband Dennis Chilton); 4 grandchildren, Cherree, Cynthia, Theodore and Charles; and 3 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Chalmers Gage payable to the Elk Grove Future Farmers of America. Mailing address:  Elk Grove High School, Attn: Controller, 9800 Elk Grove-Florin Road, Elk Grove, CA 95624.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 8, 2019, at the Elk Grove Grange Hall, 9125 Elk Grove Blvd, Elk Grove, CA 95624
