Mello, John J.

Christmas Day 1925 - December 17, 2020

John Mello was born inModesto, the fifth of six children born to Frank & Maria Mello.  He passed peacefully in God's warm embrace at his home surrounded by his loving   family and others whose lives he touched.  He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, of 71 years, daughter Eileen, brothers Frank, Eugene, David, Joey and sister Mary.  He is survived by his children, John Jr., Linda Denton-Green (Douglas), David (Jube) Mello, and Rosemary Robinson, (all graduates of Elk Grove High School) and eleven grandchildren; Jalynn, John III, Mary, Eileen, Brian, David, Natalie, Jillian, Morgan, Talia, and Caleb. Twelve great grandchildren; Julia, Sarah, Jace, Kyla, Maya, Jackson, Brooklyn, Sawyer, Abigail, Dallas, Maverick, and Ridge; and Sister-in-law Shirley Caetano (Roger) of Sunnyvale.

John arrived in Elk Grove in 1952 where he operated and owned the family dairy farm, first on Gantline Road then Calvine Road, and finally Eschinger Road where he resided for 53 years until his passing.

He was a very active member of St. Joseph's Catholic church where he was Head Usher and Festival Chairman. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus, being Grand Knight on two occasions as well as being awarded “Knight of the Year”.

He was a charter member of the Portuguese S.E.S council of Elk Grove (on Stockton Blvd) as well as twice past president, and Fiesta President.

He was a Director of the Western Dairyman's Association.

Always considered a special man, John was presented on his 90th Birthday from County Supervisor Don Nottoli, a plaque of Proclamation, dedicating December 25, 2015 as “John Mello Day” in Sacramento County.

In retirement he further his dedication to the church and community.  His favorite pastime included; golf, fishing, avid reader of novels, watching old westerns on TV, tinkering in his workshop, NOT watching sports on TV and Loved spending time with family and friends.

John will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor, a genuine love for his family and friends. A compassionate man, always willing to help his family, friends and all others.

Services will be on January 7th, 2021 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church located at 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Road, Elk Grove (across from the park). Viewing commencing at 11:00 AM followed with Eulogy and Mass.  Interment to follow immediately at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, 6700 21st Avenue, Sacramento.
