Services will be held in Madera, California for Evonne Gilman who passed away at the age of 82 in Santa Cruz.
Born to Roy Giuseppe Sordi and Grace Helm Sordi, she was raised in Madera, and graduated from Madera Union High School in 1954. Early in her life Evonne took up baton twirling becoming the Northern California Junior champion at 13. She then went on to become head majorette for Madera High competing and winning at the local and national levels. Following high school, she attended Fresno State college and was married to Roger Wolfe, and soon after began her career as mother while also working for the Madera County District Attorney’s office as a transcriber. While living in Walnut Creek, Roger unexpectedly passed away and soon after she married John Stephenson. They returned to Madera where they owned and operated Woods N’ Goods furniture in Madera. Evonne eventually worked as City Clerk for the City of Madera from which she retired. Following her retirement Evonne moved to Capitola where she married Virgil Gilman and they eventually moved to Elk Grove. More recently Evonne returned to Capitola.
Evonne will fondly be remembered for her wit and wry sense of humor. She was an excellent seamstress and loved to crochet and knit. She thoroughly enjoyed making baby clothes, blankets and sweaters for her family and friends who treasure her gifts for their beauty and craftsmanship. Evonne loved nothing more than to spend time with her friends, either playing cards or talking at the kitchen table. She was especially close to her sister Royann Cappelluti and spoke fondly of trips to Fresno to shop, have lunch and smoke cigarettes. She was also a voracious reader and could read two novels in a day.
She is survived by her son James Wolfe, son Christopher Wolfe and wife Athena, son David Wolfe and wife Christy, stepson John Stephenson and wife Dana, brother Roy “Rookie” Sordi and wife Darleen. Evonne adored her grandchildren Noah, Adam, Tanner and Ryann who will miss their Nonni dearly. Other loving family members include her niece Laura Hinners and nephew Robert Sordi, nephew Brett Cappelluti and Jeff Cappelluti, their children, as well as other extended family members.
A memorial service will be held on Friday November 1st, 2019 at Jay Chapel in Madera (1121 Roberts Ave,) beginning at 11:00 a.m. A reception at the Vineyard will follow at 1 p.m. She will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Calvary Cemetery.
