Bernard (Bernie) James Dougherty, 89, of Sacramento, California, passed away on February 26, 2020, after a brief hospitalization for chronic conditions, surrounded by his family. He was born in Northfield, Minnesota, in 1930, the 4th of 5 children to Joseph James and Helen Irene (Thornton) Dougherty.
Never one to sit still for long, except when enjoying his coffee and donut, Bernie joined the Army at age 21, serving as a pole lineman in the signal corp. Just months after his discharge from the Army he enlisted in the Navy and served in the 4th Division, USS Navarro (APA-215). He served his country with honor and distinction during the Korean conflict. It was during this time he met and married Alma Irene Sundin, herself, an Army veteran. They settled in Southern California and raised 5 children. Bernie retired in 1989 after 27 years as a US postal carrier. In retirement, he took up a myriad of hobbies, including calligraphy, target shooting, reloading and he always took pride in keeping his yard looking beautiful.
Bernie had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a good friend, a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed trips to the casino with his daughters, was always quick with a story or joke and was a mainstay at Golden Donuts in Elk Grove.
Bernie is preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Alma Irene Dougherty; his daughter Patricia A. (Dougherty) Hom and his son Mark J. Dougherty. He is survived by his daughters Teresa I. Dougherty, Denise Dougherty Doering and Brenda L. Dougherty; sons-in-law Richard Hom and Jim Doering; grandsons Christopher M. Hom, Nicholas J. Hom and wife Miranda Hom; great-granddaughter Hayden Patricia Hom.
