Updated, Sept. 20: A driver traveled the wrong way on Highway 99, north of Elk Grove, and crashed head-on into a car during the early morning of Sept. 16. That impact fatally injured his passenger, authorities reported. The suspect was hospitalized, as of press time.

The Elk Grove police earlier pursued the 34-year-old suspect, Jacob McPherson on Calvine Road, but they terminated their chase when he entered the wrong lanes. He was operating a vehicle that was reported stolen, the CHP stated. The suspect was also determined to be intoxicated by a controlled substance.

After McPherson is released from medical care, the Elk Grove police and the CHP are recommending charges of gross vehicular manslaughter, felony police evasion, DUI causing injury and death, and possession of a stolen vehicle.

The driver of the other involved vehicle was hospitalized for non-life threatening injuries, the CHP reported.

Around 2:40 a.m., Elk Grove police officers chased McPherson who reportedly drove a gold Honda Accord on westbound Calvine Road. The CHP reported that he entered Highway 99’s southbound lanes and traveled in a northbound direction.

McPherson then crashed into a Honda Insight when he went the wrong way on the Stockton Boulevard on-ramp, the CHP stated. Authorities arrived at the crash site and found the Insight driver to be trapped in his car, but he was still responsive to officers. McPherson’s passenger, who traveled in the Accord’s front passenger seat, was unconscious and later transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Sacramento County coroners identified the victim as Derrick Simpson, 48. They did not report his city of residence.
