Every July, the Elk Grove Optimist Club sponsors the annual Kohl’s Child Spree in collaboration with the EGUSD Regional Student Support Center, Elk Grove Kohl’s, and a host of community volunteers and partners.

The purpose is to give students in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade who are experiencing socio-economic challenges a chance to start school with new clothes, shoes, and a backpack with school supplies and more. Usually, we have volunteers from the community take the students around Kohl’s to help them select their clothes. They are also offered breakfast and haircuts, have their eyes tested, and they can participate in other activities.

Unfortunately, because of the COVID-19 pandemic and “social distancing” this year, Kohl’s Child Spree will look a little different. We do not want the kids to miss out on this opportunity this year so the plan is to have EGUSD employees from the Regional Student Support Center take the students individually around the store to help them choose their school clothes, shoes, etc. The EGUSD Regional Support Center will also provide them with backpacks. We are unable to host the breakfast or all the other activities we usually have because of social distancing, but it is important that the kids get new clothes, shoes, and backpacks.

We were unable to hold our crab feed this year that helps support the Child Spree, because of the pandemic. If any business, service club, or individual can help us by giving a donation of any size, we would appreciate it. All donations will go toward the Child Spree.

Send donations to Elk Grove Optimist Club Foundation, P.O. Box 114, Elk Grove, CA 95759. This event is always a success because of our volunteers and donors.
