School board approves LGBTQ Pride Month

The Elk Grove school board on June 25 approved a resolution to honor Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month.

Tammy Silvera presented the resolution to the board and showed photographs of Elk Grove school district officials and employees who joined the Sacramento Pride parade last month. She noted that a youth leadership summit for LGBTQ students was recently held at the district’s Trigg Education Center and she said that she expects to see all of the district’s secondary schools to have Gay Straight Alliance student clubs in the next school year.

“It’s so very important for (the students) that they see explicit demonstrations of our support,” Silvera said. “They go into every classroom and school looking to see if this is a safe space for  (them).”

Arts director to join Elk Grove Unified

Visual And Performing Arts (VAPA) programs across the Elk Grove Unified School District will soon be led by a new director.

The Elk Grove school board on June 25 approved the hiring of Sofia Fojas to be their district’s VAPA director. This position was created last year due to requests from art educators and students who wanted a district-level leader to guide their programs.

Fojas currently works for the San Francisco Unified School District where she is the supervisor of the district’s Cultural Equity and Social Justice in the Arts program. She previously taught music in the San Jose Unified School District.
