2010 Coach of the Year: Joe Cattolico
![]() |
By Jon Gudel - Citizen Sports Editor
To him, modern football isn’t about technology. No headsets, please.
It isn’t about hiring a half-dozen assistants. No wristbands with plays. No change in offensive philosophy.
When asked if he considered switching to the growingly popular Pistol offense, he responded, “I don’t know enough about it. I’ll just stick to what I know.”
No Gatorade baths either, as he politely declined from his players just as they lifted the cooler after Pleasant Grove clinched the program’s first-ever Sac-Joaquin Section title with a 21-6 win over Monterey Trail in the 2010 Division I championship game.
Cattolico, with a Division I title and a section runner-up on his resume in just five varsity seasons at Pleasant Grove, was selected as the Citizen’s 2010 Coach of the Year.
“In terms of football X’s and O’s, he is without a doubt one of the best in the area today,” said Pleasant Grove’s athletic director Jeff Caton, who played college football at California State University, Sacramento and coached for 18 seasons. “Our football team makes very few mistakes between Week Zero and Week 14. Joe is very good at instilling the discipline needed to ensure success on the field. He also has a mysterious way of getting the most out of our kids. We have some pretty good football players here at PG, but if you were to take our team, put them in a room full of high school kids, you might not be able to pick them out of the crowd.
“We don’t do spring football, our kids don’t go to summer camps, we do very little 7 on 7 games over the summer and Joe doesn’t demand our coaching staff to spend countless hours meeting on the weekends preparing for (a) game, yet he finds a way to win.”
And win is about all he’s done since he arrived on campus from the South Bay in 2005. Searching for lower-priced housing and a football-driven community, Cattolico applied for the open position at Pleasant Grove, then the newest high school in the Elk Grove Unified School District.
Caton never envisioned five years later his football program standing in the end zone at CSU Sacramento’s Hornet Stadium posing for a section-title photo. Yet, that’s exactly what Cattolico, a Princeton graduate, and his staff achieved to become the school’s second section champion.
Pleasant Grove reached the Division I title game for the second time in three seasons.
“Joe loves football,” said Laguna Creek High’s football coach, Mark Nill. “He is very gracious in victory and defeat. He is a teacher of both the game and coaching itself. He believes in, protects and promotes our profession.”
Since section realignment in 2006, Pleasant Grove High has compiled three seasons of 10 wins or more, including a school-best 13 this season, and is 48-15 overall.
They won three consecutive Delta River League titles, sharing the 2009 title with Monterey Trail and Folsom. A bid for a fourth consecutive title was snapped with a 35-20 loss to Folsom.
It was Pleasant Grove’s only loss in 2010.
Folsom, which upset Grant in the Division II section championship game, beat Serra 48-20 in the state bowl game, validating Pleasant Grove’s possible invitation to a state bowl.
Undefeated Palo Alto was selected instead, and subsequently beat Centennial for the Division I state title.
“He demands that his kids play the game the right way and teaches them life lessons through our great sport,” said Cosumnes Oaks High’s football coach, Ryan Gomes. “With that said, he is a tremendous coach as well between the lines. You always know Joe will have his kids prepared to play hard and fundamentally sound year in and year out. His tenure at Pleasant Grove speaks for itself.”
It was a historic season for Cattolico and Pleasant Grove, as well as for some of his players individually.
Running back Mark Jenkins led the section in rushing yards (2,379) and touchdowns (41). Jenkins was voted the DRL’s Offensive Player of the Year.
Junior Arik Armstead was selected as the Lineman of the Year.
“Besides the success on the field, the thing I like most about Joe and probably the main reason I hired him is because of his integrity,” Caton said. “He is a coach I can trust to do things right, he is very conscientious about following district, league and section rules. I can sleep at night knowing our football program operates by the book.”
Through it all, Cattolico has remained humbled and seemingly embarrassed by the instant success of his program. Often sidestepping credit, he instead praises his coaching staff and players.
He is never one to speak negatively, nor does he display the accustomed, emotional roller coaster following a win or loss. His practices are fast-paced and repetitive until the play is done correctly.
His teaching tools are more evident in practice, whereas game days he usually strays alone down the sidelines to collect his thoughts.
He is certainly rare in today’s coaching fraternity. Unafraid to aid an opposing coach, Cattolico is widely considered one of the region’s premier football coaches for more than just his on-field accomplishments.
“A few years back before I got the head job here at Sheldon, I sat in on a presentation he gave at a Coaches Clinic and was blown away by his approach to his job,” said Josh Crabtree, who just completed his first season as Sheldon’s head coach. “He is truly unique in our profession. He has managed to strip away many of the things that burn out head coaches.
“He focuses on making his players better athletes and better young men. He refuses to let any of the other stuff get in the way of him doing his job. After sitting in on his presentation, I had a few questions for Joe. I was a bit apprehensive about reaching out to him considering the competitive relationship our two schools share. But when I ultimately did reach out, he couldn’t possibly have been more accommodating. It is a real credit to the type of guy he is.”
Monterey Trail football coach T.J. Ewing, who lost to Pleasant Grove and Cattolico in the Division I championship game, said it best: “Great man, great family, great coach.”

That's too bad about Tom Rossow and Russ being fired. Nixon should fire himself and replace himself with someone whio know more. Oh yeah, he is the genius. "

The Varsity Coaches that were unjustly fired, heard about it first from family members, players, parents, and teachers... not from Coach Nixon. Nixon hoped that if he ignored these coaches that they would just go away. It is a shame that Mr. Nixon cannot take responsibility for his inability to be a good Head Coach, but instead blames everyone else around him and gets rid of anyone that challenges him, or is a better coach, and is able to connect with the players.
To Coach Cattalico and the parents at PG, I am sorry that the head football coaching issues at EGHS are being vented on Coach Cat's Coach of the Year article. I believe that as parents and fans, if the PG football program, that you clearly love, were in the same situation, you would possibly be doing the same.
Congrats to Coach Cat... Well deserved! "
