Smith set for Dec. 19 main event
Scott Smith, a graduate of Elk Grove High School, is returning to the octagon for the first time in six months.
Smith, who still resides in Elk Grove and is an assistant wrestling coach at Albiani Middle School, is scheduled to fight unbeaten Cung Le in the Strikeforce: Evolution main event on Saturday, Dec. 19 at HP Pavilion in San Jose.
The Mixed Martial Arts card, which also includes Robbie Lawler and Matt Lindland, will be broadcasted by Showtime. Preliminary fights start at 5 p.m., with the main card beginning at 7.
Smith, 30, has not fought since a third-round submission loss to Nick Diaz in June. The fight was stopped at 1:41 of the third round due to a rear naked choke.
That snapped a string of back-to-back knockouts for Smith, widely regarded as one of the most entertaining fighters because of his knockout ability and willingness to absorb punishment.
Smith is 16-6-1 in his MMA career.
Le has not lost in six career matches.
Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com or at the HP Pavilion ticket office.
